I stared at her in disbelief. Actually, it wasn’t disbelief, but the torrent monster of jealousy raging against a blue-eyed beauty. I remember being her, with all the naivete of being unsure in the world but sure of its possibilities. She amazed me. She spoke with hope and dreams and all the ideals that my life has lost — even against my willingness to grasp their ankles on the way out.
I am sure I was staring at her uncomfortably. But I could not help but stare and see myself, unmarried, no child, no mortgage, living off of Allsup’s burritos and Red Bull.
