The Lyndon Baines Johnson
Memorial Grove of 500 white pines forms a living memorial to the thirty-sixth
President. Inscriptions carved in pink granite, quarried from the Texas hill country where
Johnson was born, detail the former President’s views on such issues as
education, civil rights and the environment.

River and offers a sweeping view of the capital. Tulips,
daffodils and other flowers decorate the park.

LBJ, who was a Texas senator and John
F. Kennedy’s Vice President, took over the presidency when Kennedy was
assassinated in 1963, and served until 1969. He had a down-home, comfortable style
with people and was considered a master of compromise. He was the youngest
Senatorial Minority and Majority Leader ever.

As President, he instituted
several important programs, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Medicare;
the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act; The Water Quality, Clean Water
Restoration, Clean Air, and Air Quality acts; the Space Program; and the War on
Poverty. Despite his successes, Johnson was eventually brought down by his role
in the Vietnam War. The memorial includes a recorded address by the President’s
wife, a picnic area, and a mile of walking trails.
