Turkey Hunting With A Bow
Turkeys have been a staple for big game hunters since before our nation’s founding. Turkeys are found in many regions throughout the United States and can be a great source of food for a family in normal times or in emergency situations. Knowing how to turkey hunt and practicing the skill before you have to rely on hunting as a main source of food is a critical skill for a prepper in my opinion. Turkey hunting is something that can be accomplished by hunter’s of average skill (such as myself) and with very little specialized equipment. Below are a few things you will need before you get started turkey hunting.
– A Turkey Call. There are many different types, but in my opinion the easiest to learn how to use is a basic slate call. Click here to see an example of a slate call. A mouth call is also good for when the Turkey is in close.
– Camouflaged clothing. Turkey’s have excellent color vision, so good camo is a must! I prefer a 3D type of camo. I recommend the Cabela’s brand to see the type I use click here. 3D camo makes a huge difference in the amount of movement you can get away with in my opinion. It is far superior to even the most advanced 2D camo on the market.
– A good shotgun or bow and some ammo. In the videos below I shot this Turkey with a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum Synthetic.
Take a look at the videos below to see some of the mistakes we made while turkey hunting with a bow and some of the things we did right to be successful turkey hunting with a shotgun.

Once you have had success turkey hunting you will need to know how to clean the turkey in order to take advantage of all of the meat. Watch the video below to see the basics of how to field dress turkey. One thing we could have done to make this process a little easier would have been to hang the turkey by his feet and let all of the feathers fall to the ground. This would have made it a lot cleaner process. (Thanks to a reader for that suggestion).
