Even if you live in a nice part of town, we live in a world where crimes are committed every day. In fact, the likelihood of a robbery, vandalism, or invasion taking place at your home is probably higher than you’d like to know; with that said, investing in a home security system is never an absurd endeavor. In fact, according Forbes magazine, approximately 16 percent of American homes are already armed with home security systems.
Installing an efficient, effective home security system adds both protection and peace of mind. If you’re in the market to invest in a home security system, installing a camera is definitely an affordable, reasonable option to look into. Read further to uncover the main five things to look for when purchasing a home security camera.
One key thing to consider whenever you’re in the market to buy a home security camera is image quality. Not surprisingly, the cameras with the best image quality are most expensive ones; that doesn’t mean that you have to go bankrupt trying to purchase a good camera though. Whenever you’re doing your shopping, make sure to inquire about the image quality of different cameras. Oftentimes, companies will show you images taken directly from the camera, so that definitely helps in the decision-making process.
In addition to image quality, another factor you’ll to want to consider is whether you want black and white or color camera. If you’re looking for a very basic home security camera, in all honesty, a black and white camera will do just fine. Sure, color cameras are more accurate at capturing nuances and details, but black and white cameras are much more reasonable in pricing. Furthermore, black and white cameras usually capture the same quality images as color cameras during nighttime.
According to a study by the FBI, almost 80 percent of all home burglaries and robberies are done through the front or back door. In light of this, it’s wise to consider placing your home security camera at one (or both) of your doors, as well as by the windows. In fact, you should probably have cameras installed to record the outside and inside of your home.
Have you considered whether or not you want your camera to be visible? If not, you’ll definitely want to give that some thought. Home security cameras are small enough nowadays that they can be easily hidden almost anywhere. The good news about this is that any vandal or burglar that chooses to come into your home won’t know there is a camera videoing their every move, which helps you easily capture an image of them. There are some critics, however, that believe visible cameras actually deter criminals from committing crimes. After all, who would be dumb enough to venture into a home after noticing a security camera staring them right in the face?
Last but not least, you’re going to want to decide whether or not you want a wired or wireless camera. Wireless home security cameras are more expensive and relatively easy to install and hide. One problem with wireless cameras, however, is that if the camera is too far away from its router, the image quality will go down (and sometimes not work at all). With that said, you’ll need to look into a camera’s connection strength, which is the distance in which the camera can be placed away from its router. Inevitably, wired cameras are more ideal due to their stable connection, which you won’t have to worry might fail to connect to a router.

Chose “megapixel” cameras at a minimum. Any camera with a sensor below 1megapixel will leave you wanting for a better picture, especially at night.
Hide your DVR, or set up a dummy. Invaders will look to take video evidence with them when they leave. If they can’t find it, or if they think they have it (but only have a fake), so much the better for you later in court. If the bad guys have a false story to sell, you can put them lie to their faces and laugh as they go into the penalty phase of a civil case.
Go with a combination of visible and hidden cameras. Both have strong points; those being a visible deterrence and the ability to avoid damage, blocking or avoidance. Invaders will try to ruin your day whether you are home or not. Do what you can to protect video evidence of what they do.

Some thoughts.
Visible AND hidden. Deterence is an obvious practice, but some guys will try to disable a camera if they can. Spray paint, a towel, hammer…. If the only goo place for a camera happens to be someplace reachable, you’ll want another the bastard can’t see.
All around coverage. Get as much coverage as you can. Cheap cameras for down the side of the house for instance, but good stuff where it counts – places where the bad guy will pause and smile for you.
Wired. Better quality. Run the equipment off of a good battery backup unit to keep them in the game if the bad guy cuts house power. I’d shoot for nothing less than 30 minutes power, though I sue an APC 3000 which goes much longer than that. (I have a battery extension unit that might work with it – have to test it out….)
Go MEGApixel. Cost is coming down. You can go with cheapo units for transit area initially, and upgrade later.
Supplement you camera system with motion activated lights. It might scare the fools off. Layered defense!

You can place most wireless security cameras up to a hundred meters removed from your home network base station, either within or out. In an exceedingly typical home, meaning it doesn’t matter wherever your cameras go. And it’s why a wireless security system is ideal for looking at yards, sheds, and different far-flung indoor or out of doors locations. You’ll even be able to purchase kits for out of doors mounting to trees or ceiling mounts for within.
