Great post but it seems to be aimed at blogs that already have traffic. I would like to see a post on optimizing a blog for search engines.

That was a great post. I have one question. How do you do number 8? I see a lot of people with the bookmarklets on their sites, but I don’t know how to put it on mine. Please let me know how to do it.

Thanks for the comments everyone. DeAnna you asked about #8, adding the ability to have your posts added to Digg or bookmarked via Del.icio.us. At one point I had this on my blog, and what I did was go into my blog’s dashboard (It’s a Blogger blog), and I added the appropriate code in the post footer so that it was added automatically to each post, letting the reader bookmark the post or Digg it.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll translate some of your content and post it in my post of the week about this subject.
It may look a little like we’re only interested in boosting the traffic in our blogs, but most of the tips bring a lot more than that. Like usability, when you link to other blogs with related content, for example.

Track your visitors. This is so important. Once you have distributed your URL across the net you need to find out which links generate leads. And then you can concentrate your efforts on the respective sites

My readership is decent but my incoming links don’t reflect that because most bloggers in my genre think putting a link in their blogroll is all they need to do. So while I’m not crazy about meme’s I find that by customizing them to fit the topics my readership enjoys I can build those incoming links. I don’t do them all the time or they’d be ineffective. But I do watch for new ideas to use in that manner to build. I also look for a little controversy now and then. I’m not really a pot stirrer but believe in getting a discussion going.

Mack – Excellent points, as always, although I’d take exception with the title. A lot of the things you wrote down here might be “simple,” but some of them are hardly “easy.” 🙂

Risingrainbow, I’m not generally a fan of memes, but if done correctly, they can provide value and links. In December of 2006, I started the Z-List, which became a meme focused on highlighting deserving blogs that I felt were unappreciated. In the original Z-List, I didn’t link to my blog (The Viral Garden), and didn’t encourage anyone else to either.

But I just checked and that post has currently been linked to at 266 other blogs. Of course several blogs on the original list got far more links than that. From my blogging experience, you best build your traffic and links when you are trying to do good for someone else. Sounds hippyish, but it works 😉

I like #6, “contribute on other blogs.” Mostly when people leave comments like that on a blog people DO see right through you and sometimes not only that, they just automatically get marked as a spammer! Guys thanks for the additional comments! Also, if you are active on Twitter, you’ll begin to notice that a byproduct to your twittering is more people coming from Twitter to check out your blog!

One way to increase traffic and comments to your blog is to make it a DOFOLLOW blog and add it to the dofollow directories. Many blogs are nofollow and therefore do not pass on the link love.

And if I may, my question would be: Where do I find the code for that nice, clean little row of pics for social news aggregators YOU have at the bottom of your posts (Facebook, Digg, Twitter, Stumble, etc)? The code for the row of social media pics is setup for our blog publishing software, Moveable Type, and it looks like you are using Blogger as your platform. I don’t know how to implement it for Blogger but I’ll provide you with the code and maybe there is a Blogger expert that can help. Also, take a look at these two options which are pretty nice and I think they even show you how to implement on Blogger:

I would add, article marketing, forum posting to related niche forums, and retweeting other peoples posts.

It is amazing how these things will add to boosting traffic.

A tip for some that may be new to blogging; I have found that Word Press is the easiest blog software to use for me. Keep in mind that I am a “tinkerer”, wishing to update my theme, add on new features to my blog, etc. In that regard, Word Press is very easy for me to use. I also like blogger.com.
