Well, part of it boils down to understanding struggle and what it means to be struggling. I didn’t grasp the concept at the time — marking it off as merely sheer stubbornness — but the more I’m understanding struggle now, the more that period of time makes sense to me.
Struggling for so many people is stigmatized and it makes sense. It’s hardship, and can be a source of frustration for many people. After all, people generally want to live a comfortable life and avoid any kind of difficulties.
But all of us know that we can’t avoid it and that we need to experience pain.
And it’s that fact that turns people off so often.
But struggling is a part of that. It’s trying to overcome the pain and suffering and the problems we’re facing. And it’s in those instances where so many of us give up entirely. That we think the struggle is not worth it.
This made me realize that struggle fits into our motivational cycle in some fashion. When we struggle, it’s a sign that we are at the peak of our motivation. And from there, we have the option to either give up or continue to pursue forward. This is similar to problems that we face or any other negative emotion that we need to deal with.
But struggling is a little more than that and recognizing what struggling really is can help us tremendously in moving forward.
Struggling is a measure of where you are right now.
It’s a reminder of how far you have come from who you were and where you are now. Because deep down, we’ve all changed a little bit during our journey. With every new step we take, we change. It’s why we continue to have problems along our path.
They are challenges for us to change ourselves. To look at a problem or a concept in a different light. They may be small shifts but it is a shift nevertheless. A change in our personality or beliefs.
But it’s this revelation that is so powerful and it ties in with our struggling. The reason I think that is because we wouldn’t be struggling if we weren’t growing at the same time.
And for some people, that motivation is enough to continue moving forward. Back when I struggling more than I am right now, I continued to move forward under the belief I would become a better writer in due time. I still believe that hence why I’m dedicating more time to writing every day and challenging myself to keep it up as best I can.
But now I can do that easier. Because I understand further that struggling is like every other problem. It challenges us to grow and it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come.
And that’s something that can never be taken away.
