Hi there.
I am 26 years old and visited my GP last week about a hard lump I found during a self-exam. The GP said it was not a cyst or fatty tissue and has referred me to the Breast Clinic. I have my appointment next week.
I am not sure what to expect, can anyone advise? Will I receive any results on the day or have to wait any longer?
How long should I expect that I’ll be at the appointment?
I am understandably nervous.

Hello!
So depending on what type of breast clinic it is will generally depend on what you have done. Most of them are one stop clinics which means you’ll see the consultant who will feel your breasts for the lump and they’ll then send you for an ultrasound and you get the results from this on the day. If needed, they’ll also do a biopsy and the results from this will normally take 7 to 10 days to come back. I’d say because you’re 26, you won’t have a mammogram.
The whole process is generally done really well and is run pretty smoothly but you’ll probably be there a couple of hours. If you have any more questions definitely don’t need be afraid to ask

I am 42 and was referred as a result of a self exam. A nurse examined me and asked me what was concerned about, I then had a mammogram, then an ultrasound, and they told me at that point they were concerned and did a biopsy. I then had a session with a nurse who told me it was highly likely it was breast cancer but they wouldn’t be able to confirm anything until they had the biopsy results. I got the biopsy results a week later.
I was there for over 2 hours.
I would take someone with you if you can for support and to ask questions.
Overall it was very smooth process, and they were honest with their concerns throughout the appointment.

I understand that I probably shouldn’t be so anxious about this as it is an initial appointment but it is hard not to be!

Unfortunately my partner is working away the night before but he is going to try to meet me at the clinic. I don’t have any family that live nearby and I don’t want to worry my parents if they don’t need to worry!
I think I am pleased that they are likely to be honest with their thoughts throughout the appointment, despite not being able to confirm results.
Is a biopsy only likely if they’re concerned? Was the biopsy painful?

I don’t know what makes them decide to do an biopsy, some other people may join the thread and share their experiences. In terms of pain, they numbed the area first so I didn’t feel any pain. I had a bruise afterwards and had a small amount of pain but nothing paracetamol couldn’t sort out. I think for it was the unknown that made me anxious which is completely understandable.

I had my biopsy last tues. I so wish I’d taken someone with me. I had a complete breakdown beforehand and they suggested they’d just monitor me instead. Anyway decided to go ahead…it was awful. I’d definitely rather have a c section than that!
i don’t have any lumps just calcifications. No one has mentioned BC at all, but I’m taking my partner with me on thurs for the results

When you say the biopsy was awful, do you mean the pain or psychologically? Sorry for the questions but I just want to ensure I am prepared for what to expect.
My partner is working away the evening before and so Im hoping he’ll be able to meet me at the clinic by the time/if a biopsy is necessary. My partner is supportive but he also refuses to believe it could be anything other than ‘nothing’. I know that is probably sensible as it is the likely outcome but the irrational part of me still worries.
I feel like as my family are quite far away I can’t tell them about this yet as it is likely to turn out to be nothing and I don’t want to worry them unnecessarily.

I haven’t told my family either. Don’t want to worry them if it’s nothing.
id convinced myself that it was such bad news if I needed a biopsy so wasn’t in. A great place Mentally. Apptbwas 30min late so by the time I got in I was hysterical.
the anathestic needle was the most painful, the biopsy itself was ok. Stopped being sore just yesterday

Hi WL,
I was just reading the threads and saw your post, I am returning tomorrow for biopsy results, I was just wondering how the nurse knew it was probably cancer?
The reason I ask is because I was recalled after a mammogram, no symptoms or lumps, had an ultrasound and the doctor said she really wasn’t sure what it was, it could be active breast tissue or if it was cancer it was very small and very treatable but it was still 50/50. I then had a biopsy and at that point I got really upset so they asked a breast nurse to sit with me, she was the voice of doom, told me that once I know what cancer I have it will be easier to deal with and that I should expect a lot of tears and pain over the next few months, I was floored. I had gone from the doctor saying we don’t know what it is to a nurse pretty much telling me to expect to hear I have cancer.
I get my results tomorrow and go from it will be fine to thinking about what the nurse said.
Sorry I think I may have rambled a bit there x

When I went I had a very big lump, so there was clearly something unpleasant going on. At the clinic I had a mammogram, then an ultrasound and biopsy, which wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d imagined it would be.
I asked straight away if they thought it was a cyst and from the consultant’s answer it was clear they were pretty certain it was cancer.
I had a two-week wait for the results. I imagined the worst over that time and cried so much, something I never usually do. I thought I was dying, but it the end it, while it was cancer, it was completely treatable and all done and dusted within 6 months from the clinic appointment to successfully finishing treatment.

I don’t know how they knew, I’m assuming it’s based on their experience, what they saw on the mammogram and ultrasound. The ultrasound nurse shared with me at the time she was doing it that it looked concerning.
I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow, let me know how you get on.
