About 6/7 weeks ago I was diagnosed with mastitis I’m not breastfeeding and I’m 19 . I’ve had this a few times before in the last year but it’s never been like this before. I was first given a weeks worth of antibiotics which I took and they didn’t work. I was then given a weeks worth of steroids which also didn’t work. Doctor tried to give me more steroids but they made me feel too sick and then the same happened with a different antibiotic. My left boob is so swollen and red and painful. I’ve seen on this website that if mastitis doesn’t get better after antibiotics you should be referrered to a breast clinic. This just hasn’t happened. Now around a year ago I found a lump in my right breast which was a fibroadenoma. Since then it’s got a lot bigger and doctors said it should be fine. In the last few days I’ve found a new lump in the right breast which is red and hot which makes me Worry. I’m massively worried that it’s inflammatory breast cancer, I’ve seen the symptoms and the way that the supposed mastitis has behaved etc. I’m honestly so worried. I have an appointment with the nurse tomorrow but I wish I couldve been referred to breast clinic before now. I know cancer is rare in someone of my age but rare doesn’t mean it’s not possible so I’m so worried. I genuinely feel like Doctors’s don’t take me seriously because of my age. So scared x

I am very sorry to hear about the symptoms you have, they sound distressing. By now you may have spoken with the nurse and could have been referred to a breast clinic for an assessment.
Your symptoms are not necessarily anything to do with cancer but I can appreciate your concern. Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare subtype and you are young , so it is unlikely that you have it even with your symptoms.
The best thing to do, if you feel that it is necessary, is to make another appointment with one of the doctors and explain your symptoms and the reason why you’re worried. Breast clinics do see women with other conditions that affect their breast and not necessarily cancer so it is a reasonable request to ask to be referred to one.

Thanks for your reply I do appreciate this but I’m a little confused as I have a lump, a rash, redness , hard to touch and swollen and these are all symptoms outlined by this website as inflammatory breast cancer which is why I’m concerned. They are very painful too. On the cancer research page about inflammatory breast cancer it outlines that if mastitis doesn’t go away after one course of antibiotics you should be refereed to a breast clinic and 7 weeks later I’ve finally been referred. However as non urgent. I feel like becuase of my age they aren’t worried and I know it’s rare at my age but things can happen. I’m going to call back doctors on Monday and request to be put as urgent as I really can’t wait up to 8 weeks to go to the breast clinic. It’s more worrying as as well as the “mastitis ” I also have a new lump. Last year when I found a new lump it was put as well urgent. So I just don’t see why it’s different this time. Xxx
