Hi all,
So I’ve been experiencing various symptoms for over a year now, including night sweats, severe fatigue and more recently enlarged cervical lymph nodes and intense itching all over my body.
There are other symptoms too and my GP referred me to a rheumatologist over a year ago, to rule out things like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. All of these tests have come back negative and due to the night sweats the rheumatologist referred me to respiratory, to get me checked for TB. These tests were also negative (including a chest X ray) so that was ruled out too (probably 8 months ago).
I am actually a medical student so have become a bit worried about the itching and enlarged lymph nodes I’ve recently been experiencing (alongside the night sweats and fatigue) as I know they are all signs of Hodgkins Lymphoma and at 24 I’m also in one of the more risky age groups. (I also have glandular fever 2.5 years ago so don’t believe it is that).
I am due to have my next rheumatology appointment in August so was thinking about waiting until then to tell her about my symptoms. I would usually go to the GP but am currently with my parents, two hours from my usual practise. I just don’t want to waste time as well due to the current covid situation!
I guess I would just like some advise on what I should do!!?

Most GPs are doing telephone appointments, so being two hours away shouldn’t matter. But if they want to examine you in person, I think it would be worth making the effort to travel to your usual GP. If you don’t drive, perhaps a friend can drive you. Otherwise, trains and buses are running although on a reduced service. As a last resort, taxis are also operating.
Don’t worry about wasting the GP’s time. The GP won’t complain about that. If you don’t see your GP now, but have to see them later because your symptoms became more serious, then the GP might ask why you didn’t see them earlier.

Hello and thanks for your post
I think RogerD has given you very good advice. Because of the coronavirus pandemic it shouldn’t matter if you live 2 hours away as GP’s are currently offering patients a telephone or video appointment initially with their patients. After the consultation, if they feel they need to see you, they can offer you a face to face appointment.
Lymph nodes can be caused for various reasons, such as a local skin infection, or a blocked or inflamed lymph gland (lymph node). Sometimes lymph nodes come up in response to a recent bacterial or viral infection elsewhere in the body even when someone feels well. They can take a long time to go down again.
It sounds like your doctor has taken your symptoms seriously as you’ve seen a specialist and had some tests which came back fine. Unexplained symptoms can be a worry, but in many situations our bodies get better by themselves and nothing serious is the matter.
I think it’s reasonable to let the GP know that your symptoms are persisting. They may consider doing further tests over time if this is needed. It’s often a process of elimination to find out the cause of someone’s symptoms.
I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk things through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Kind regards,
Celene
