Hi All,
Just after a bit of advice, I’ve had a sore throat (especially when swallowing) for nearly 4 months now. Been to the docs numerous times, had 2 complete full blood tests (for all sorts), ultra sound of the throat/glands and also seen an ENT specialist who put a camera down my throat. All of which came back fine… But still the pain is there. Good old aniexty is 0telling me it still must be something serious although with all the tests which have been done i should be confident there isn’t.
So question is, has any one had a viral infection which wouldn’t shift/go away. Or could the anxiety just be causing this all along?
Many thanks all in advance

Hi countrylad,
Well first off all its seems you have had a pretty much good MOT on yourself with all the tests and the fact that they have all come back fine is a good sign.
So from that I would take it the medical staff are happy that there is nothing sinister going on and no further investigations are being done.
That said if you are still suffering then suggest you may want to see GP again and discuss options re medication to try and clear. I am not medically qualified, nor is anyone here, to diagnose but i am aware that viral infections can linger for a while, especially when untreated,
Would advise you to stay off google as so much mis information and can set mind racing and I would also concurr that anxiety can be playing a part as you will worry about symptoms you feel until clear.
At the end of the day its right you should get to the bottom of and get some medication if you are still in pain, but re iterate your series of tests have all come back good,
Just my observations and hope you get to bottom of this with your GP.
Please feel free to come back and post/chat or ask any further questions
regards
ian

Hi Countrylad. Welcome to the forum.
I’m in a similar position. For the last year or so, I’ve had a chronic sore throat, particularly on awakening. (Right now, as I type this at 7:50 am, it’s pretty bad)
In November 2017 I saw my GP, who suggested a protocol to fix possible acid reflux. No improvement so went back mid December 2017. My GP immediately referred me to ENT, who gave me a superb service: camera up the nose, neck/throat MRI, “panendoscopy” under general anaesthetic. All clear! No conclusions, other that a suggestion I should lose some weight! Well, I was just into the obese BMI so I cut back on calories and lost two stone, but no change to the sore throat.
It’s probably worth mentioning that mid summer 2017 (prior to my sore throat), my GP diagnosed me with “mild” fibromyalgia, and many such patients do report chronic sore throats. I now assume that my throat may possibly be a manifestation of that disease.
FWIW I find the best relief is to occasionally suck on a Vocalzone pastille, recommended for singers.

Hello. I could have written your comments myself. Its driving me nutts! I’m fit and healthy as far as I know. ENT seem to think its silent reflux. I’ve just started taking a ppi 20ml and cut out alcohol, chocolate, spice, tomatoes, onions, garlic and fried food. Still got a sore throat!! I’ve recently lost my Mom so put it down to anxiety but that was 2 years ago. I’ve had a sore throat for 9 months now and its getting me down!!!

Sore throat for last 3 months or more. Has scan on thyroid and camera up the nose down to the larynx. Said could be reflux. I’m going doc tomorrow to try organise MRI. Have camera going into eosophagus on Monday. Docs don’t panic but I’m getting it hard to keep it together.
Time will tell I hope.

Hi Annie
Gosh we are both in the same boat!! I have had a sort of sore throat on one side and slightly painful sensation in the year for about five weeks.
Went to Doctors twice and they said not to worry. Of course I did, and I am!! Made a private appointment to see ENT specialist. He looked everywhere and did the flexible endoscope thing down my nose and said all looked normal. Did say though to go for MRI which is due on 2nd September. The pain seems to come and go and sometimes I think it is all in my mind and relax and then, like this morning, it’s back!! I start reading all the stuff on google and I have all the symptoms for throat cancer!!!
I feel absolutely fine but now am so stressed that I can’t stop thinking about it. One part of me says how can I feel so good and have cancer. We must keep in touch.
Good luck
Sue

Try not to panic.
I had a persistent sore throat which didn’t go away. Saw an ENT and had the endoscope. Then an MRI. Then a “panendoscopy” under general anaesthetic. After all that – got an all clear. That was about 18 months ago.

Thanks for your reply. That’s good to hear. Did you go to see a specialist privately or did your GP send you? I was too nervous to wait for a referral so went to the specialist privately. Cost a lot and the MRI scan will be nearly £500 but worth it for peace of mind.
Do you still have the sore throat??

I was referred by my GP so everything was paid for by the NHS. Yes, I still have the sore throat – don’t know why.

Well at least you can relax now and not worry. After all those tests you must be fine! Hope I’m the same.
Good luck for the future

Hi there. I have had the same thing for 6 months now. All started from a normal cold and then a chest infection.
Had a few CBCs and all come back clear, as did infection markers.
They thought it was silent reflux and had 5 weeks of Omeprazole which did nothing.
Had the camera down throat at ENT and he said no cancer but had swollen lymph nodes and should be ok in a few weeks. This was June and it’s still bad now.
Other doctors thought it was Glandular Fever, but 2 blood tests didn’t confirm it. Was not strep either.
Now they think it could be my thyroid (been on Levo for 11 years now).
Got a throat ultrasound in a couple of weeks and done nothing but cry and cry for months as convinced I have cancer.
I so hope everyone on this thread is ok now and found out what they have.

Hi all you guys, I had a constant sore throat and swollen tonsils since November 2018 when i had the flu. After a few months i went to docs and he gave me antibiotics, it didnt clear up ! A few mobths later i went to docs again, he gave me steriods and antibiotics. Still didnt clear up. Felt really rubbish, throat really sore, making me feel weak, my bones were aching like i had mild flu all of the time. He.ended up sending me to hospital. Ultrasound, xray, several scans later, still nothing wrong found.
My doctor took a blood test for an unrelated matter, i was found to be viramin D Deficent. I started taking 1000mg of vitamin D everyday, and within 2 weeks my throat had virtually cleared up. After nearly a year i was starting to feel better …. unbelievable !
I can’t believe that that was all it was!
Please try it, it worked for me , what have you got to lose but a few quid on vitamin D tablets !
Im 46
Good luck guys xx

I know they say don’t Google things but I’m so glad I’ve found this thread,
I started having a sore throat about a year ago, but started a new job and coffee was flowing and I put it down to my increase of intake, which actually could still be the case,
Over the year its come and gone but always been there in the background, but since October I’ve just kept getting sick like I have a immune system of a baby,
But the last 5 weeks buy throats been very sore with no other symptoms so had a trip to the doctors 2 weeks ago, had a blood test all came back OK, I’ve been prescribed acid reflux pills last week as went back as there has been no improvement and as first was given ear drops to unblock ears as the Dr thought that can cause sore throats,
I am now waiting to get an appointment for an MRI scan on the throat and if acid tables don’t work then Dr will check espeosophagus,
Very frustrating as everyday I’m waking with a very sore throat and nothing I take eases it or makes it any better,
I’ve decided to stop drinking coffee and eat less meat as feeling drawn to more plant based foods.
God bless you all,
John.
