Hi
I was told by my consultant that for the hormone receptor results I am 4 out of 8 on all 3 receptors and therefore they are treating me as triple negative breast cancer. I have tried to research this but there is not much information so I was wondering if anyone else has had this type of diagnosis.

Hello and thank you for posting on Cancer Chat. I am sorry to learn that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This must be a difficult situation for you.
I must admit that I am slightly confused by your situation and so it is a struggle to give you useful information. So, I think that if you have any questions it would be best to ask your own team.
As you know triple negative breast cancers are cancers whose cells do not have receptors for the hormones oestrogen and progesterone and they do not over express (carry to much) of the Her2 protein. When tests on the cells are done for the hormone receptors the results are usually presented on the Allred scale. I assume that this scale has been used to measure your breast cancer cells, but I don’t know.
With the Allred system, the score goes from 0 to 8. The higher the score the more receptors there are and the easier they are to see. In terms of how a breast cancer is likely to respond to hormone therapy, those who have an Allred score of 0- 1 definitely will not benefit from hormone treatment. But at 4 (if it is the Allred score that is being used to measure your cells) I don’t think your cancer would be classified as hormone negative. There is a chance that you might benefit from hormone therapy. But the chances are not so high. This has probably influenced your specialists decision.
I don’t fully understand why the third marker is also 4. If this is referring to Her2 score, this only goes up to 3. If the score is 0 to 1, it’s considered HER2-negative. If the score is 2, it’s considered borderline. A score of 3+ is considered HER2-positive. With borderline tests another test called a FISH test will be done on a sample of the cancer tissue to determine if the cancer is HER2-positive. But this does not usually give a score, it just comes back as negative or positive.
I am wondering if this reply has made things even more confusing for you. I do hope not. But do remember that if you have any questions you can call your breast care nurse. They know the full details of your situation and therefore are better placed than me to give you answers.
