If I was only allowed 5 words for the entire article it would be this: Many people are incredibly stupid. I’m not sure if it’s selfishness, ignorance, the American way (do what I want when I want) or many believing that this is some massive hoax conspiracy. Allow me to elaborate.
I know a guy…
I know a guy who traveled over 10 hours across multiple states this past weekend for leisure. Stupid move number 1. Once he and his wife got back she started showing symptoms of the CV in the form of labored breathing, coughing, fever and more. While knowing this he decided that until his wife was able to get tested he had to “get out of the house” because he was getting stir crazy. Stupid move number 2. He then proceeded to interact in close quarters (meetings, same vehicle etc) with other people – NEVER telling them what was going on. Stupid move number 3, As of this evening, his wife has tested positive for COVID 19. To put it bluntly, this guy or anyone else who does similar are f*cking idiots.
My wife is on the front line
My wife works as a cardiac nurse in one of the major hospitals in the city and as you can imagine, this is front and center for everyone there. This evening she came home and shared detailed information that her and the surgeons were discussing based on their personal experiences and info that the surgeons were receiving from colleagues. I want to keep this generic as I cannot afford to pass along misinformation but what I got from this is: this is anything but an old person’s disease, the heart can also be impacted, people who seemingly recover sometimes take a huge dive and then perish. Additionally, I recently read another article which outlined folks in their 30’s and 40’s with no pre-existing conditions who are facing serious problems because of this virus. Knowing all of this brings me back to 3-4 weeks ago when I stopped going to Jiu-Jitsu and was ridiculed by many of the folks who attend with me. “This virus is BS, just wash your hands it’s weaker than the flu.” As of today that gym is now closed.
Big boy rules
Being an adult requires that one make responsible decisions. “I’m an American and will do whatever I want to do” no doubt is playing into the decision to close things, restrict movement and direct folks to shelter in place. Unless you believe this is totally a government move to take over society, the rest of us understand that people are stupid and will continue to spread this virus until they are mandated to remain at home. I too raise an eyebrow at some of the things going on and have voiced concerns…but you have the Alex Jones types who would call NWO / Deep State if we passed a law requiring people buckle their seatbelts. Based on what I have read and on what my wife has seen every day, this is definitely something that requires people to make responsible decisions.
Perspective is everything
I would wager to guess that most Americans have known nothing but prosperity in their lives. Most things available, freedom to do whatever and whenever, a decent life…hell our homeless have it better off than many 3rd world countries. Before any of you jump to conclusions about my perspective I can remember being that dirt poor kid growing up in a trailer park and yet I never really went hungry, always had clothes on my back and velcro shoes on my feet. Thursday was cheeseburger night, my prize possessions were a few Star Wars figurines and it was a long time into my childhood before we got a black and white TV.
I state all of that because this hardship that we are just entering into is freaking people out. “I just want to live my life, watch sports, go to bars, do normal things.” Guess what, that sh*t is over homie. Done, postponed until further notice. I saw some article about Tom Brady and the NFL…who gives a damn. If people are flipping out now they better buckle up as this ride is still clawing its way up the first hill, we got a long way to go.
Final thoughts
I’m fortunate, blessed even, to have a job with relative security during this time (we shall see). I don’t have to leave the house and I still get paid, as long as I have phone and internet I’m good to go. Even then, I know other folks in other states who are complaining that our annual raise was pulled this year. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Be thankful that we have a job! Unbelievable.
As this continues to develop I’ll keep you all posted, lots of time to write now. Tomorrow I’ll probably take the trail down to the creek, it’s 1000 ft drop in elevation but still a good water source if I need it and in a secluded spot. A nice time with the dogs and to get my mind off of things. Until tomorrow.
We are staying at home also. Plenty of projects to do around the house. My biggest concern is for our health care workers. If they go down with this virus, what then? My friends who are nurses at big hospitals say they are full capacity with sick, injured, necessary surgeries, etc. Praying for them all. Have not heard of virus in our town but who knoss? Brother in FL self quarantined & awaiting testing. We are in good shape and rather far out in the county side. Neighbors following suit. We text to check on each other. Cancelled eye exam & will cancel dentist appointment. Hoping all our relatives & friends will stay home & stay safe. Praying for everyone affected. Ready to ride this out for several months. God willing we will stay well.
While everybody else is hoarding toilet paper 🧻
I went and bought a new truck yesterday!
They practically gave it to me 24% off MSRP!
Nobody in the dealership just me and manger.
Never one to waste a pandemic.
And yes my daughter works as a nurse but not
in a hospital, in a cardiologist office.
Monday all employees sent home on
paid leave till further notice 😷
Like the man said: some people THIS MEANS YOU) are incredibly stupid…and you have the nerve to brag about your good deal! Congratulations on your new truck and I hope that every time you look at it you mentally imagine the face of that salesman you may have contaminated-IF he’s still alive. And your daughter works in a cardiology facility??? I hope you haven’t seen or touched her. I begged my 69 yo husband to cancel his cardiac appt because of idiots like you.
Today all car manufacturers shut down all
facilities. No more new cars in the near future.
No cases of covd-19 in my county yet.

Wow. Lots of good stuff here. This probably should have been four posts!
First, “anyone else who does similar are f*cking idiots.” is way too generous. I’m going with “criminal.” One of the great “blessings” of this virus is that children while they can spread it, are basically immune. If this thing were killing little kids, panic would be turned up to 11 and there would already be actual blood in the streets. And thoughtless people like this would be the first victims.
Second, you’re right about younger people suffering from this as well. The stats seem to be that if you are in your 30s or 40s, you have about a 1 in 7 chance of ending up in the hospital though, with treatment, the death rate for that age group is about 0.2%. Note the “with treatment” part and be afraid, be very afraid.
Finally, you’re absolutely right about perspective. In early February I was talking to a software developer who lives in a reasonably prosperous Asian country. When I suggested that he make some preparations for if things went bad, he started laughing at me. “I don’t have a flashlight and a crank radio just in case the power goes out. It goes out a couple of times a month. Same for water. I buy 20 kilos of rice at a time and we’ve always got a supply of other staples in the house. That’s just the way you have to do it here. It’s no more about ’emergency planning’ than it is when buy a raincoat. You know it’s gonna rain, you just don’t know exactly when.”
That really made me think. What we think of as prepping is really the norm in a lot of the world. Asia may weather this better than we do because we’ve had it extremely good and lost a lot of the resilience we once had. Here, the coronavirus is the biggest crisis of our lifetime. There, it’s just one more damn thing they have to deal with.
I was talking to a friend of mine in the UK this morning and she was going on about how people are panicking and seemingly flailing around trying to buy up whatever they can. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we have not had anything that has had a prolonged effect on us as a nation (or globally) in at least a generation. Our society as a whole has had a long period of relative peace and prosperity and we are now at a point of realizing that this could very well be changing for an extended period of time.
Here’s hoping we see the worst of things soon and we get back on the upswing.
I would suggest folks use some of their “down time” reading about or watching documentaries on subjects such as “1816 The Year Without A Summer”. The Worst Hard Times (story of the dust bowl of the 1930s, or The Irish Potato Famine. It’s an education in just how fragile our daily lives are & how quickly everything can change. Hundreds of thousands of lives lost, many to starvation. And, of course, I suspect many have already read up on the Spanish Flu of 1918. Depressing, yes, but perhaps a realism we need to face. Stay well all.
