Illegal immigrants released without coronavirus testing can cause “irreparable harm”
Conservative journalist Tucker Carlson criticized President Joe Biden for releasing illegal immigrants without testing them for the Wuhan coronavirus. The Fox News host accused the Biden administration of “punishing” Americans and endangering their lives with the move. Carlson also commented that migrants entering the U.S. illegally are not subjected to COVID-19 tests.
The Tucker Carlson Tonight host opened the Feb. 9 episode of his show by saying the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) required air travelers to get a COVID-19 test before entering. He then remarked how illegal immigrants are seemingly exempted from the rules. “Tonight, we learned that the Biden administration is releasing thousands of foreign nationals living here illegally into American neighborhoods without bothering to test them for the coronavirus,” he said.
Carlson then played a clip from a Feb. 5 White House news conference, where Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the policy of releasing untested immigrants. In the clip, Fox News correspondent Kristin Fisher asked the press secretary regarding COVID-19 testing for migrants. Her question came as Customs and Border Protection remarked having to catch and release migrants in the community without testing them.
Psaki appeared confused by Fisher’s question, clarifying if she insinuated that migrants were indeed released without being tested. The correspondent answered: “They’re being released … because of the executive order that the president signed earlier this week.” At the end of the clip, the press secretary then challenged Fisher to cite which order mandated it.
Carlson then said: “COVID-infected illegal aliens released into the U.S. … it’s not like there’s a pandemic. The press secretary didn’t care enough to answer the question.” He insisted the government’s refusal to test illegal immigrants was a method of “punishing” legal Americans.
“When we release people that break our laws without bothering to test them for the [Wuhan coronavirus] … what we’re saying in the clearest possible terms [is] ‘we don’t like you.’ This isn’t a policy [but] an act of aggression … designed to humiliate you and demoralize you. Reckless, non-destructive immigration policy is the penalty … for your white supremacy,” Carlson commented.
Carlson cited two law enforcement officials who confirmed that illegal immigrants were indeed released without being tested. National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd told the host: “So we’re releasing people without knowing [if they’re infected], which puts the public at risk.” Yuma County, Arizona Sheriff Leon Wilmos, who also appeared in the show, seconded Judd’s statement.
The journalist then welcomed Jackson County, Texas Sheriff A.J. Louderback. He asked the sheriff: “Is it true in the state of Texas that people who have been detained because they’re not here legally … are being released without a coronavirus test?”
Louderback replied in the affirmative, saying that it was “absolutely true.” He added that he received a memo that went along the lines of defunding Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “This is a particularly devastating document for Texans and Americans. The message has been sent. It’s a message to the world that you can come here illegally, commit crimes here and remain here illegally,” the sheriff commented. When asked why illegal aliens were not tested for the coronavirus, Louderback said he was sure testing was not a forgotten item. He continued by criticizing the Biden administration’s “haste” in rolling back the immigration policies of former President Donald Trump.
The sheriff pointed out that COVID-19 issue “is conveniently overlooked during this time” and predicted that the policy of not testing illegal immigrants will cause “irreparable harm.” Louderback warned: “Every peace officer in the U.S. should be extremely concerned about the attitude, the lawlessness [and] the complete, abject removal of law. We have a nullification of the law going on here. We’re not going to enforce anything.”
Back in October 2020, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) released a report that the federal government was not testing illegal immigrants for the coronavirus. Senior CIS researcher and study author Nayla Rush called the refusal to test immigrants “puzzling” as the law orders that refugees and other immigrants must undergo medical examinations for “communicable diseases of public health significance.” (Related: Spike in coronavirus cases worsened by infected illegal aliens flooding into U.S. hospitals.)
According to medical guidelines released by the CDC, “communicable diseases of public health significance” included tuberculosis, leprosy and sexually-transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis. Anyone found with these illnesses can be denied entry to the U.S., the report said.
