Hi, my mum had a CT scan and biopsy taken of her stomach over a month ago. She was told she would most likely get the results within two weeks, but when she heard nothing, she phoned to chase (two weeks and three days later). She was told it was likely to take another two to three weeks for an appointment (two weeks ago now). However, when she asked the nurse what they had found she was told she had ulceration of the stomach. When she asked directly if she had cancer, she was told ‘yes’. The nurse said her results were being referred to haematology because they suspected lymphoma.
So, my 74-year-old mum came off the phone thinking she had stomach cancer, which I’ve explained isn’t the case! I am very aware that there are many types of lymphoma and that they can start in the stomach. But this waiting for an appointment is becoming really stressful. She was told she would be referred to a hospital n Sheffield but she’s called again today and been told she’s actually been referred to a Haematologist at a hospital in Doncaster (where she had her tests). Still no sign of an actual appointment though, and she’s been told to call the nurse again in a week if she still hasn’t heard anything.
I’d like to think that the fact she’s not being rushed through means that it’s not so urgent, however, I have been a health journalist for far too many years to really believe that.
Does anyone else have a similar experience with waiting right now? Or with haematology at Doncaster? Mum said the nurse seemed to think the wait was normal. But knowing you have cancer and not having much clue as to what type or when you might get seen is beyond stressful! I appreciate the NHS is under intense pressure right now, but that just makes me more worried that she’s not being seen as quickly as she might.

Waiting for an appointment and treatment plan!
I am in similar situation, although not as long. After urgent referral to Ent Clinic , several tests were ordered before a Mtd meeting and appt to discuss outcome. 3 different dates were arranged; then cancelled by hospital. However I have contact with the consultant’s secretary , she is `keeping me on her radar’ and feel reassured , she explained that biopsies can take 2 weeks, usually quicker when cancer suspected, but with Covid and staff working in different areas. At present the system says , report being generated. She has said as soon as the system says generated , she will make sure consultant opens it.
Maybe you could contact the consultant’s secretary for more clarity and reassurance .
Mine has:said to call anytime; I decided and agreed I would call her in a week’s time (by then 2 weeks, 2days from biopsy)
to which she replied that hopefully before then I would hear from her. Once I know results are in I expect a consultation within the week , the Clinic runs every Monday and Secretary says she can always fit me in. Obviously as in yr case I am anxious to hear results and treatment especially as some symptons:increased.
Good Luck , will update when I hear of appointment.

My Dad has just been diagnosed with Lymphoma that’s spread to the liver. He’s waiting for another scan and a biopsy. We haven’t been given a date for either of these and no one seems to know when they might be, just need to waiting for a phone call we have been told. The waiting/not knowing is the most stressful thing they can put anyone under. Dropping a bombshell like that without a next step is extremely difficult to deal with. So I feel exactly the same as you, I’m very worried he’s not being seen to as quickly as he should be and with no one to contact either feels very lonely. Best of luck to your mum.

Thank you. The nurse mum spoke to has said to call back next week if she hasn’t heard anything so I’m keeping everything crossed. Sorry to hear about your wait. No wonder you are anxious! I hope you hear some good news soon too. Stay strong & good luck! Xx
