Hello! I am currently in a bit of a limbo and stuck at home worrying and self diagnosing which is obviously NEVER good. I have been having a problem with bleeding after sex and bleeding after smears for a while now. It doesn’t happen all the time but does occasionally.
The problem is that I have been very non sexually active for the past few years so I actually havent noticed it much. There was a while about 3 years ago where I was sexually active and I would have spotting after sex, and so I went and told my GP about it and got my smear done. He told me “not to worry” as the smear test came back normal. He said my cervix was “friable” and said that this was because some of the cells that should be inside the cervix were on the outside which made it bleed more easily.
I took his advice to not worry about it, then I was very non sexually active and didn’t really have any issues. I had my most recent smear done 3 monts ago and it came back normal and no HPV which is good. I did bleed a bit when getting it done, they didn’t mention anything wrong though although the doctor (a different one) mentioned that it was quite easy to access the cervix wtith me (whatever the hell that means)
Then last week I had sex with my flatmate who I am in lock down with (great idea lol) and I had spotting for two days afterwards.
I decided to actually google “cells outside the cervix” and found that this is cervical ectropion and can cause bleeding after sex and lots of discharge.
I guess I just feel a bit powerless, like…I am slightly worried that I am bleeding after sex and would like to go back to my GP and ask them about this, maybe ask for a colposcopy just to double check that there isn’t anything more severe going on. Obviously I can’t do this right now because of the lock down, so I just feel pretty anxious. I know that my smear came back normal but I just keep thinking of all the cases I have heard of CIN where peoples smears are normal.
I also just feel really weird about the fact that my doctor was so casual about the cervical ectropion and the bleeding after sex and didn’t really explain it to me properly leaving me to my own devices and googling…I mean everything I have read show that it isn’t that serious a condition in itself but considering it mimics other more serious things then it is really unsettling. Plus it just makes me feel kind scared to become sexually active again because I don’t wanna just be spotting all the time.
I hate it when things go wrong with your body at a time like this when you can’t just have everything checked out with a GP. Sorry to post here, I understand that others have much more severe probems right now. I was just wondering if anyone else had any similar experiences with etropion.

Hi Dr Google is a very bad idea, he frightens the liffe out of me for no reason.
It won’t hurt to contact GP, they still speak to people despite corona and you could get reassurance regarding what you have experienced since you were last checked.
Please let us know how it goes

Hiya I’ve been having the same issue, since having my baby 10 months ago and get alot of bleeding after sex, I also had a smear and a few other swaps done that all came back clear, and have been referred to another specialist (cant remember the name of it) but it’s worth a call to your gp, most gp are doing telephone appointments now so I wouldn’t worry to much about going in, if you do they will provide you with masks xx

A cervica ectropion is not cancer. That’s why my gp has said.
this is easily fixed with surgery.
I am currently waiting for this surgery.
I also have bleeding after sex it’s awful that I cannot be intimate with my partner as often as I’d like but I must be healthy myself

I’ve been having the same issues and and feeling the same as you for almost three years. Not sure how active this thread still is but hoped I might be able to help someone else feel they are not going mad.
I went on the mini pill in 2016 after having to have my coil removed because of an ovarian abcess. It didn’t suit me so eventually I came off all contraception and my husband had a vasectomy (my hero!)
While on the pill I had a bit of spotting after sex but thought it was the pill causing it. Then came off and it got worse so went to gp. Eventually referred to consultant and I was diagnosised with polyps and ectropion.
Consultant removed polyps and did biopsy as I was an emotional wreck at this point and all came back clear. Also had smear that was clear.
The ectropion has never gone away though and I’ve been back to the doctor but just been told again it’s ectropion. Then I started mid cycle bleeding and they worked out that was likely ovulation spotting.
Eventually my tactic has become only having sex during my period so I can’t tell if I’m bleeding and avoiding it the rest of the month. Occasionally I can’t put up with that and have sex outside of my period, I bleed, get upset, swear not to do it again and avoid sex for a couple of months. As you can imagine, this is totally miserable.
But all this to say I feel exactly the same as you. Trying to be logical that its ectropion as my biopsies and smears were clear but worrying over why it’s not going away. Whenever I’m not sexually active it’s not an issue but as soon as I am then there’s blood. And then there’s the torturing yourself over what all this means and the doctors not giving any further help other than saying ‘it’s ectropion’
I think I’m going to have to go back again as it’s messing so badly with my mental health and my sex life, not to mention my marriage, but I don’t hold out much hope that anything more will or can be done. But at least I can say to someone else that you’re not alone!
