How to achieve what you want!
A random conversation over chai with an office colleague brought up this topic. I was always of the opinion that you need one area/thing in your life that you are passionate about and you can make your life revolve around that.
That’s where my colleague, Manish gave me a completely different perspective about looking at this. The idea that there will ever be one thing that will always provide you with the motivation or the happiness for a whole lifetime is utopian and hardly going to happen in the world we live in.
That got me thinking and what I realised was that you have to develop multiple avenues that provide that to you so that you can fall back in case one thing starts draining you out. A job can only provide you with so much satisfaction. There are a lot of people who love their jobs, but there are ups and downs there. So where do you derive the constant will to power yourself through hard situations? Similar to any personal relationships, there are both ups and downs. How do you let something bad or unwanted happening in one aspect of your life not affect the other?
I have the following analogy here, hear me out. Our life is a well, every time we do something that we don’t want to, we end up drawing water from that well. Whenever there is a positive moment in our life we add water to the well. Let’s assume the groundwater that normally recharges a well is absent in this situation.
The moment the well dries we have a really big problem on our hands. So how do we avoid getting to that point? We need to be cognizant of our state of affairs, realise what is causing us to draw water from the well, and what is adding water. Then try to maximise the addition the minimise the removal.
I think we can look at our lives along the following dimensions –
1. Professional — Typically your job or professional interests.
2. Relationships — With your Parents, Siblings, Friends, Girlfriends or Spouses.
3. Passions/Interests — Things that keep you up at night despite knowing that in most likelihood, it will not become a source of income for you. Something that you do only for your satisfaction.
4.Health — Your general wellbeing. Being fit, your diet and things like that.
It’s only normal that somedays in office you are working and trying to solve a crazy and hard problem that excites you. On other days? Working on some lame presentation or listening to your boss go on for hours about how the next meeting with a client could make or break for the company.
I believe personal relationships are very important to remain focused or for that matter derive the motivation to do something in other aspects of our life. Be it with your parents, siblings, girlfriends or spouses. Having a happy and cheerful relationship gives immense strength while facing and trying to solve hard problems.
I think it is also important for you to have hobbies or interests that you develop over time. When was the last time you were in a high-stress situation, and you decided to read a completely random book or decide to take a bike trip or anything that you love doing? Did you feel totally liberated? Did the heavy burden on your shoulder suddenly seem a little lighter? That’s why always maintain some interest no matter how hard it is to pursue.
Last but not least, is to take care of your health. Feeling lethargic post lunch? Try eating something lighter. Tired by the end of the day? Try exercising and building stamina. Being at the top of your fitness game takes you a long way.
PS — I had written this almost a year back, but while discussing this with a friend I realised it was not just a fleeting thought but maybe something that should be considered?
