How to Ensure Your Comeback is Stronger Than Your Setback
It’s one of the greatest comeback stories of 2019, maybe of all time.
Tiger Woods hadn’t won a single major golf tournament in 11 years. He ended that particular drought in April by winning the Masters.
I don’t even watch golf, and I’ve been fascinated by his victory. As most of us can clearly remember, Tiger Woods had it all. And then he didn’t. His fall wasn’t a particular pretty one. It included infidelity, divorce, multiple injuries, an arrest, rehab, and years without winning a major tournament. All very devastating, I’m sure, and also very, very public.
Many people said he was done. A comeback just wasn’t in the cards for Tiger. Then, with the whole world watching, he proved them all wrong.
Tiger Woods doesn’t have the monopoly on setbacks, of course. We all experience them, no matter our arena. Whether it’s professional or personal, involving your health, relationships, family or career, setbacks are inevitable.
That doesn’t make them any less painful, though. When life throws you a curveball, it can be devastating. Your self-esteem, confidence, motivation and happiness can all take a toll, and it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
We all deal with setbacks differently. There are, though, some common themes of people who have been dealt a blow, and come back fighting.
Let’s try to break it down. Here are some specific skills to help ensure your comeback is stronger than your setback.
After a devastating loss, we all have the power to stage a comeback, but few of us actually do.
Allowing yourself time to grieve and heal is crucial, of course, but regaining your optimism and rebuilding your faith in yourself is nonnegotiable. This doesn’t mean it’ll be easy, but knowing it’s possible is the first, crucial step.
If you don’t believe in yourself, so the popular saying goes, no one else will. If you’re struggling in this arena, consider affirmations, meditations, or talking it through with a trusted friend or therapist.
Tiger’s fall from grace, for example, was painfully public. He didn’t let it stop him, though, from believing he could pick himself back up. And he did.
Picking yourself up from setback after setback is discouraging and disheartening. It’s natural to want to throw in the towel.
Allowing yourself whatever time away you need, then slowly and steadily rediscovering your motivation, is critical to future success. No matter what your internal motivators are, whether it’s family, your passion, or just wanting to prove others, identifying what drives you can only help in the long run.
People who always seem to succeed in life have one thing in common. In short, a narrow, single-minded focus on your goal, where you hone in on what you want and discard the rest, is a must-have for anyone, no matter your dream.
Success is found in defining and detailing exactly what your goal is, that thing that makes you come alive. With this goal in mind, you extricate yourself from all distractions and DO THAT THING until it’s finally done. Everyone who has turned a setback into a comeback has most likely done just that.
We all need connection with others. This is doubly true when we’re faced with a setback.
Turn to the people you trust most for advice, encouragement, or even just a hiatus from thinking about your situation. It can be hard to reach out when you’re feeling down, but support from friends may be just what you need when you feel as though you’ve lost your footing.
The little things really are the big things. How you handle the details of anything is how you’ll handle the important matters. When you’re faced with a setback, it can be important get back to the basics of what you’re after.
People who make a comeback treat the minutiae as if it really matters, because they know it does.
We’ve all experienced setbacks in life, but not everyone has the drive and hunger to turn it around into a comeback.
Losing it all, then gaining it all back is a skill, and one I hope you now know is possible. With a little hard work and positive action, though, your comeback is well within reach.
