How To Inject Intention Into Your Life
Many of us have started to live a life of routine. You wake up, eat breakfast, hop in your car and head over to work. You complete your tasks for the day, come home, fix yourself some dinner, sleep and do the same thing the next day. Although routine is comfortable and necessary for some, it can cause us to fall into a robotic state where we become less conscious of our day to day decisions and therefore sadly live less intentionally.
Once we’ve been accustomed to repetitive decision making, we slowly stop questioning ourselves and the way we go doing things, or even worse why we go about doing things. I’ve started to notice that routine can erode our decision to consciously do things with intention — leading us to live a life filled with less meaning, passion and purpose.
What’s the big deal you might ask? Why does it even matter if you live with or without intention? The word “Intention” represents a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future. (Bratman, M. (1987)). Thus, intention is necessary for successfully accomplishing any goal or achievement. Intention becomes increasingly more important for big decisions or goals that we have in life such as marrying the person of your dreams, developing healthy relationships with your friends, losing weight or helping others. Doing things with intention is a pre-requisite for manifesting one’s purpose in life. With all the negativity in the world, I truly believe in the importance of acting intentionally, living purposefully and making sure that our purpose positively impacts others. I’ve personally managed to transform my life to one that is filled with more intention. Through this, I have identified 3 pieces of actionable items that I hope help you inject more intention into your own life:
Majority of goals aren’t accomplished in life because we haven’t established a deeper purpose or intention tied to the menial and repetitive tasks it takes to get there. You may notice a pattern of actions in your life that quickly discontinue and deconstruct simply because there’s nothing deeper tied to them than something of the surface level. It’s like going on a 15 hour road trip without reminding yourself of where you’re actually heading. The driving itself is going to be arduous at times and you might even want to throw in the towel half way through or settle for a closer destination. However, you need to remember and constantly remind yourself where you ultimately want to end up. You have to make a deep connection that surpasses the actual action of doing something, because, overtime that action will just become a repetitive obligation that doesn’t ignite your soul.
I’ve started to practice self-interrogation more frequently by questioning myself more when it comes to decision making and trying to make it a habit. The word “interrogation” might be a little bold here but I often find that questioning myself from all angles and at different levels helps me drill down to making intentional decisions. The ultimate goal of interrogation is to identify someone’s motive and piece together bits of information to create a full story. Examples of questions that I ask myself are:
· Does it get me closer to my purpose?
· Why is this important to me?
· Is it what I really want?
· How could this play out?
· What is my gut telling me?
I can’t completely attribute my questioning habits completely to myself. I’ve luckily surrounded myself with an amazing partner, family and friends that I know have my best interests at heart. They constantly challenge me to ensure that I’m acting with intention.
I find that a lot of us let instant gratification pull us away from reaching our ultimate goal and purpose. We want physical pleasure and opt-in for the one night stand and end up in an endless cycle with someone who we know we can’t see a future with. However, what we really long for is a healthy long-term relationship with someone who inspires us to be a better human being. We’ll indulge in the late night snack to curb our sugary cravings, when we ultimately desire that beach body. I constantly remind myself of the dangers related to instant gratification and how important it is to not give in. It’s the things that immediately satisfy a smidgen of our desires that deter us from ultimately reaching the big prize.
