I can tell you that I didn’t think it would take many ingredients to make Oat Milk and I was right. I will walk you through the ingredients you need to make it and before long, you’ll be able to make oat milk in no time. Here are some of the ingredients you’ll need.
Add the cold water with your dates into your blender.
Blend the dates until smooth before adding the oatmeal because it sweetens the water.
Add the oatmeal and blend only for about 10-15 seconds if you are using a Vitamix or BlendTec.
Otherwise, your oat milk may become slimy if you blend longer. Less is best, in other words.
Then strain with a nut bag or clean T-shirt piece of cloth, by letting the milk drip into a bowl.
Pour into a quart mason jar and add vanilla to taste. Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can make a bowl of oatmeal with the “pulp”, just add cinnamon, sweetener of choice and heat it up.
I am a firm believer that everything is better made at home. When you make it yourself, you know exactly what is going in it. Whether you buy it or make it yourself, you have to be willing to compare the prices and the ingredients in it. This is just an example of some oat milk that I found at my local store. The prices may vary from a store near you.
I found that making it myself was a lot cheaper, but I also had a lot of the ingredients on hand already. You may find that it’s cheaper for you to buy. In my opinion, it’s always fun to try something at least once.

can you do anything with the pulp? it kills me to throw anything away these days. thanks
Hi Joe, yes, you make oatmeal cereal. Just add some cinnamon or raisins, and heat it up. Linda
thank you!
Hi Joe, I just added how to use the “pulp” to the post, thank you for asking me!! Linda
thank you Linda!
What is the reason for the dates? and the vanilla and/or sweeteners? I would think that if I am making this, I would not want any sweetening or flavors added to it until I am making something specific. For example, when I purchase almond milk, I get the unsweetened, unflavored so that I can use it for savory dishes. If I want sweetened and flavored (vanilla for example) I add that when I want it.
Hi Leanne, this is my daughter’s recipe. She came for the weekend and helped me with the post. She uses dates for a lot of things. You are right, you could skip the dates, shes uses them for the nutrition. I know a lot of people are trying to stay away from dairy and so I was excited to try making it. It was so fun! Linda
Linda ~
Don’t get me wrong – I love dates BUT I don’t think I would want to have dates in my “milk” if I am going to use some for, say, macaroni and cheese!! or scalloped potatoes. In a smoothy I would use dates and sweetener though.
Hi Leanne, oh my gosh, you are so right!!! Making oat milk was so new to me. Now I have the giggles! Linda
Thank you for the recipe, Linda…I will definitely give oat milk a try (without the dates). I am also making almond milk today for the first time. My question is, can these milks be substituted for cow’s milk in recipes that call for milk? Thank you in advance,
Linda G
Hi Linda, I would think you could substitute any milk, it will change the flavor but it’s healthier than cow’s milk. I don’t drink any milk, but more than half of my family is vegan. so no dairy. I have never made almond milk, I love hearing this!! Linda
