It’s Gonna be a Long Weekend
On December 8, 2017, I was in a major car wreck. Although my mother was the one driving, and both my girlfriend and dog were passengers as well, the wreck was no one’s fault. We had taken my dog, Zelda, to the vet for an ear infection, and less than a minute away from my house, it happened. My mom’s car slid on ice, swerved into the other lane, and met the front of an oncoming pick-up truck. The impact was quick, and everything went black. When I came to, the pain was deafening. My chest felt like a thousand cinder blocks had been placed on it, and I could barely speak, or even breathe. Someone ran up to see what happened, and he immediately called 911. Sitting there, forcing each breath, I decided to call my father.
My phone had fallen onto the floor, and when I reached with my left arm to grab it, I quickly became aware that my collar bone had been snapped in half. Using my other arm, I grabbed my phone and called my dad. He answered in one of his classic dad ways, immediately telling some joke that he had heard before I could speak. Even though I was in pain, and I wanted to tell my dad what had happened, him joking brought light to an otherwise bleak situation. Less than five minutes after explaining, my dad arrived. The wait felt like an eternity. My dad came to the car, he opened the door, looked at all of us, and said “It’s gonna be a long weekend, but everything will be okay.” That was one of the greatest sentences that I’ve ever heard. Even though I was in so much pain and would eventually be pumped full of medicine, my dad’s comment helped me more than anything.
I ended up staying in the hospital for five days. My mom and girlfriend were mostly okay, and they left the hospital almost immediately, which made me extremely happy. It was one thing having to stay at the hospital myself, but I don’t know if I could’ve handled having either one of them also staying. After receiving numerous X-Rays and an MRI, I was told that my collarbone had been snapped, my lungs had slightly collapsed in the top, and that my sternum had been fractured into three places. To make things worse, one piece had been pushed on top of the other, causing my sternum to grate together when I took a breath. The only way for them to fix it was to fasten a metal plate to my chest, otherwise it would never heal properly. The operation went well, but the doctors ended up having to fasten two metal plates to my chest, because they found that one of my ribs had been further dislocated than they initially thought.
Although this experience was the most difficult thing that I’ve ever had to go through, over time it has also become the best. Without anyone’s consent, I was thrown head first into the unknown, and I survived. It was a complete shell shock, almost as if everything I once considered true shifted. It was the only time that I’ve ever truly had to face hardship, which through this project, helped me gain newfound respect for my ancestors. Like my grandfather has said before, he always wants to know what’s over the next mountain. When my father told me that it was going to be a long weekend, it pushed me to fight through the pain. I needed to know what was on the other side of the mountain.
