When I finished graduate school at the end of 2016, I was determined to make 2017 my year. I vowed to work so hard that I would manifest the amazing journalism career that I had dreamed about for the last two years. I sat down a few days after New Years and started applying for jobs, pitching ideas to editors, and trying to figure out why I wasn’t getting responses.
I’d stay up at all hours of the night reading, researching, and emailing. I felt normal at first. But my health started changing rapidly after a few weeks.
It came with a runny nose, sneezing, some fatigue, and a cough. It came and went and I didn’t think anything about it. The second cold lasted longer, and I could barely stand up or walk without shivering. I felt like I was dragging myself everywhere. I went on to have colds, random aches, dizziness, nausea, upset stomach and more for the rest of the year.
I wrote an essay for Lenny Letter about one of my most memorable colds. So I at least got a few bylines out of that experience. But I think I’m still dealing with how my health was wrecked. I like to call 2017 my “lost year”. I spent so much time laying down, taking naps to navigate the physical pain I was in, and hardly freelancing. I’d work from my bed because it was hard for me to sit up on my own and I barely made $16,000 that year despite working hours on several projects.
It was a huge blow to my self confidence in myself, my skills, and my ability to work. The stress from that year still affects me today. I may not catch several colds or the flu, but I still have dizzy spells, crazy migraines, and days where I feel like the fatigue is going to make me collapse when I’m walking down the street. I’m also still paying for therapy out of pocket after all of the panic attacks and depressive episodes.
Rethinking how I approach work hasn’t been easy at all. So many people in media are “on” all the time. We constantly answer emails, pitch ideas, and get very little downtime. We’re worked to the bone. Coming from a Caribbean, migrant, and immigrant family… hard work is a huge part of how we identify as a community. I’ve seen adults hold down stressful jobs, or several jobs all of my life. I’ve also seen Latinos vilified as “lazy” or “job stealing” all my life and how so many of the adults around me worked even harder to fight back against that horrible stereotype.
And I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all.
Hard work is good for all of us. We need to be disciplined and motivated to stay on top of our stuff and to make a living. But no project is worth sacrificing my health for. I could lose a job tomorrow and some of the few things I’d have to my name in order to find a new one would be my physical and mental health.
I can’t afford another immune setback.
So many of us can’t. We have to prioritize doing well in different ways, not just in terms of having a job. We deserve rest. We deserve time to feel ok between jobs and projects. We’re not machines, so we need to stop pretending that we are.
