Good article – I definitely feel that there is a lot more focus on the citations and reviews now, having lots of content and media is obviously good but it it’s not enough by itself. Businesses need a big presence online, in the places that matter.
I am working with a company right now for which local search is very important. This info is gold – and I thank you very much!
This article is really helpful, especially for small business owners who are trying to advertise to a specific geographical territory or location. Search engine optimization for these people is best done by utilizing the vertical and localized search engines–that way, potential clients or customers can better view small and local business websites. Social media sites on behalf of local businesses can also be optimized so that they also receive search results and traffic from those avenues as well!

What would be your advice be for a home-based business? In other words, is it OK to use your home address for a Google Maps submission? I don’t want people coming to my home for my product or service.

Great question. Within the business centers of Google, Yahoo and Bing there is an option to “hide” address – this is specifically for home-based businesses. Here is a screen shot of the Location Settings screen in the Google LBC: http://bit.ly/9FvyIK
As for other IYP sites, many do not have this option. I hope this helps.
