Last week I went to see the movie Green Book, by Peter Farrelly. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I’ve always been waiting to be found. As a successful pupil and student, I was longing for my teachers’ and parents acknowledgment of how clever I was. As a young teenager reading Harry Potter, I was hoping to receive a message that would reveal what superpowers I had, an invitation to belong. As a young professional starting my corporate career, I was expecting my colleagues to spot and reward my good results. As a friend and a girlfriend, I thrived on the admiration I could receive.
All my life, I have been longing for recognition of my value. Just like everybody I know. After all, who doesn’t want recognition?
The problem is, most people are waiting for it. Most of us are aware of our value — which is real — and expect that it should be acknowledged by others. But, just like an idea is worth nothing without implementation, your value is not realized until it is put to use.
Are you, yourself, discovering and reaching out to others? Or are you waiting for them to find you?
The first time I moved to a new, unknown country has been quite eye-opening for me. Nobody needed me, nobody was waiting for me, nobody even knew I was there. After a few weeks, loneliness hits you hard. There is only one way out: you have to search for others.
And guess what? People are so happy to be found! There are so many lonely people everywhere. People who look happy, well integrated, who have been living here forever. And yet so lonely, so happy to open up to you, this stranger who found them. What a surprise it was!
The second time I moved to a new country, I knew what to do. I attended Meetups, events, eager to meet these other lonely people and to recreate a home. It worked. I entered different groups and communities and soon made friends.
But recently, I realized that it is even stronger than that.
A few months back, I created a Meetup group. Out of boredom, and also because I was looking for a kind of events that didn’t seem to exist in my city.
I was astounded for three reasons. First, people were signing up for that group that I created in a couple of minutes. Second, all of those who RSVPed actually showed up on the events, organized in my modest apartment. And third, all of them were both surprised and delighted to see that a random nobody would invite strangers at her place, that people would sign up and show up and that it would be a fun, nice event. So was I. A completely reciprocal surprise, caused by these lucky encounters.
It doesn’t take much to build and maintain relationships. It mainly takes one first step. Too many people don’t dare to make the first move — and nothing happens.
Stop waiting to make the first move. Just take this one step. Just one. And see what happens.
