Instead, you will have to download the completed state tax return as a PDF file, print it, sign it, and mail it to the respective state – the address is on the PDF file. As you proceed through the tax interview on efile.com, the application will select the correct state forms for you. You can also select tax forms individually. If your Rhode Island state return was rejected by the state and not efile.com, you will receive an error reject code. If you prepared and efiled your return on efile.com, we will provide you with an explanation of how to correct the error on your return. If you are certain that you cannot file your Rhode Island return by the deadline, you do not need to file for an extension. You will automatically receive a 6-month extension of time to file your return (not to pay). The extended tax return due date is October 15, 2019. Please be aware that Rhode Island will not accept the federal extension form as an extension for your Rhode Island tax return. However, if you expect to owe income taxes, you should submit your payment with payment voucher Form RI-4868. If you efiled your return and are making a payment by check or money order, you must complete a Form RI-4868 on efile.com. If you are making a payment by credit card, a Form RI-4868 is not needed. If you are making an automatic extension payment, you also must use Form RI-4868 unless it is made electronically. Personal property (real and tangible) tax assessments and collections in Rhode Island are only administered locally. They are handled by the municipal assessors and collectors in the jurisdictions where the properties are located.The only exception is the fire district taxes collected in several rural communities.
A taxpayer who owned real property and/or made real property improvements during the Tax Year (as of midnight on December 31) is required to file a personal property statement reporting them prior to the filing year.
The state has a property tax relief credit available for residents whose total household income doesn’t exceed $30,000. The refund is calculated based on the amount by which property taxes (or rent) exceed a percentage of the household income. The maximum refund is $300. Tax credit applicants must file Form RI-1040H, Rhode Island Property Tax Relief Credit.
There is no sales tax on the boarding of animals at kennels and the boarding of animals at veterinary hospitals for medical care. However, the tax applies to supplies (including food) that were purchased by a kennel or primary veterinary operator for operating a kennel/veterinary business.
