Hi I noticed a red mark on the side of my breast about a week ago & ignored it. Been on my mind & I’ve been a bit frightened to look, anyway I’ve looked today & it looks a lot like the images I’m seeing when I google skin cancer
I really don’t want to say anything or have anyone worry over Christmas, would it be ok to leave going to the doctor until after Christmas??

I take as you mention breast that you are a female? I would try and stay away from Dr Google as it will only frighten you and gets it wrong most of the time. Only a GP examination can indicate what it may be. as for putting it off till after Christmas – only you can decide how comfortable you feel about that. Will you be worrying over Christmas?

Thank you so much for replying to me & yes I am female, I will worry either way, but if go before Christmas & they say they think it is, I know it will make me a wreck over Christmas & I don’t want to do that to the family !
I just know in general they say to get checked out ASAP but was wondering if another week would really make a difference ?? Xx

I’ve replied on your comment on Bj’s post but to answer your question – a week probably won’t make a huge difference but remember that, being the New Year, there will be people ahead of you for hospital appointments that went to their GP before Christmas & that will have a knock on effect in waiting times to see a dermatologist. As I said in my other reply, the GP can’t say for definite if it’s something serious so they would have to refer you to an expert if they thought it was suspicious enough. Only you can tell if you can cope over Christmas either knowing a) you are being referred (but it doesn’t definitely mean it’s serious), b) you are going to have to make an appointment after Christmas & the delay starts to worry you or c) your GP may be able to put your mind at rest & tell you it’s an innocent skin complaint and you can enjoy Christmas without any worries.

Thanks Angie, when you say refer you, if the GP isn’t sure how do they actually diagnose? Sorry, I’m really trying not to google to much & really appreciate having who knows to ask xx

Sadly, GPs aren’t experts in skin cancer so they can never diagnose you. The odd GP may have a special interest in skin cancer & may have been trained in how to use a dermatascope to examine the mole/lesion, but in the main most don’t have the experience.They may be pretty sure it looks like it but only a dermatologist examination & a biopsy can 100% confirm it. If a GP is at all unsure of what the mole/lesion is, the guidelines are that they MUST refer the patient, as a dermatologist is the only person that can examine it & decide if it needs removing for a biopsy. So a GP will refer if they are pretty sure it’s skin cancer and they must also refer if there is any element of doubt as to whether it’s skin cancer. The third option is – they are happy it’s a simple, treatable, skin condition. If you are unhappy with your GP’s diagnosis (if they think it’s nothing & you are still worried) you should ask for a second opinion from another GP at the practice. I hope this helps and please don’t google unless it’s websites like this or Macmillan or the British Association of Dermatologists.

Hello and thanks for posting,
I am sorry to hear about your red mark. It isn’t very likely to be cancer, and far more likely to have a straightforward medical explanation. You may have a local skin infection.
Try not to google, it does not replace medical advice, and only increases anxiety generally.
You can make a GP appointment for after Christmas. If you are worried, or it becomes more inflamed or sore, then you can ring NHS 111 for further medical advice over the christmas holiday.
You can also ask your local pharmacist for advice, they may suggest a topical antiseptic cream to apply, for example.
