Hi, It’s a year after my Breast Cancer diagnosis and treatment. I was first told I had a 14mm lump and only needed a lumpectomy and rads. I opted for a mastectomy because the rads hospital was difficult for me to get to. After the operation I was told that it turned out to be a 40mm, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, Grade 3 with 1/1 lymph node involvement. I expected chemo but was told that I only needed to have the standard 15 rads. Followed by Letrozole and Alendronic Acid (one 70mg pill a week). I didn’t want chemo but I was surprised, given my diagnosis, that it wasn’t offered. I wondered if it was to do with my age (I was 74 then) but I’ve been told that I would have still had chemo if they had thought it necessary.
Anyway, I’ve felt quite well apart from general aches and pains. Now I’ve got a bit of swelling on the inside of my elbow on my operation side and I’ve read that you can get lymphodema any time after the treatment. I don’t know whether I should get it checked out or not. I suppose in my heart I know I should but I’m scared it’s something serious.

I am sorry that you have needed treatment for breast cancer.
The swelling, while I cannot be sure what is wrong, is unlikely to be due to the cancer returning but as you say it could be caused by lymphoedema. To be sure what is causing this it would be a good idea to get back in touch with your breast cancer nurse. If she is concerned she might want to see you and if it is lymphoedema she will give you some information on how to manage it.

Thank you very much for your reply. I’ve convinced myself today that it really isn’t that swollen and hardly painful at all but I know I’m just putting off the inevitable. I will pluck up the courage to speak to my Breast Cancer Nurse.
