Hi,
I have had a swollen node on the right under my jaw for a few weeks (minimum 4 quite possibly more), I went to see the GP and was told it was a viral infection and to go home. Over the weekend it dawned on me I had no symptoms of that, no temperature, no illness in general. I went back and had another appointment with another GP who said yes you seem fine so sent me for a chest X-ray to investigate it that came back clear, I was sent for some bloods (FBC full blood count) (PBS) PB glandular fever test (ZESR) esr it that makes any sense that was returned 2 days later as clear. I have been referred to the head and neck dept and when the letter arrived it said it was an emergency referral to test for cancer (huge shock as I had not expected this) since then I find myself looking online for what it could be. The node is up on the right, but on the left I find it u comftable not painful almost like it clicks when I swallow, i am now getting a strange sensation in my right ear again no pain but almost a little numb and tunnel sound if that makes sense. Has anyone had similar to this?
many thanks in advance

Hi
I’m going through a very similar thing at the moment. In December the GP told me it’s just a case of swollen lymph nodes and it’s fine. I went back in January and ended up with blood tests (clear) and had an ultrasound on my neck which showed the nodes being large so I was referred to an ENT specialist. Since then I’ve had a biopsy and I’m awaiting the results.
I get that it was a shock to hear the word cancer, but this seems to be the process that they follow and to look for the worst case scenario first.
Wishing you all the best 🙂

Thanks for the reply, how long did the referral take from the ultra sound to ENT? Was your ultrasound done by the GP or at the hospital? Fingers crossed for your results

I had the ultrasound at the hospital by a nurse and was called the next day by my GP with the results. The GP made the referral to ENT and it was about 10 days later that I saw them.
My tests (including the biopsy after the above) were carried out before COVID19 really hit the country, which I think is impacting on appointments in other areas.

I went to the hospital Monday and the ENT man looked in my ears and mouth told me he would send me for an
ultrasound to be safe but said he thinking it is a reactive node following an infection. I have got a clicking in my throat he said is my thyroid but didn’t seem to think it was a concern or related. The ultrasound referral should be in 14 days but not heard anything yet. Covid 19 is likely to slow things down he said

That’s positive news and hope the ultrasound appointment comes through soon to be sure

Hi did you get any joy with your results?
I have been waiting past the 14 days for my ultrasound now I guess corona has casused this and the GP doesn’t know when this will happen, I have been given clarithromycin to see if it’s an infection as I am allergic to amoxicillin, 6 days in and my throat now feels like constant pressure in my throat and I am getting white dots in my mount with my right tonsil getting much bigger since taking these

I really appreciate you checking in I’m still waiting on the biopsy results, and it’s been 5 or 6 weeks now. Under an ENT specialist and he’s going to be rather busy with COVID 19 at the moment, so it’s a case of keeping waiting.
Sorry that you’re having side effects from the medication. The pressure I can imagine feels quite awful. Have you spoken to your GP about these things as may not be a suitable medication for you either.
Take care

Wow that is a long time to wait, my GP said the white would likely be thrush from the antibiotics but to finish the course and then take something for it, unfortunately the hospital have suspended all “non urgent” appointments, scans and biopsy’s due to covid. I explained it was sent as an urgent referral 14 days ago and they said I need to tell my GP to send the referral again as they didn’t seem to think it was. My app is for a biopsy and an ultrasound so no idea when this will happen.
I hope you get your results soon and it is a positive outcome
thanks

We’ve really hit the wrong time to get tested as everything seems to be getting postponed due to COVID 19.
Glad the GP doesn’t think that the other things aren’t serious and you can carry on taking the medication, which hopefully does some good.
When I had the ultrasound and biopsy, the biopsy was only done after the ultrasound and a decision made then that they wanted to do one. With that they used a local anathestic and I didn’t feel much. They took three samples and I felt a bit of tugging on the second, which was strange and not painful. I was more concerned over the fact they rested equipment on me that cost £10k and I was told not to move and knock it off!
I do hope that a further referral from your GP can at least get you the ultrasound/biopsy soon and that any results don’t take too long.
Thanks and take care

I have been put on a week course of erythromycin and a treatment for oral thrush as the last anti biotic did nothing following a phone call with the GP. They said the thrush as a shot in the dark as it could be that, I’m not convinced.
I now have a swollen lump to the right of my thyroid is uncomftabke when I sit up on th couch, an enlarged node in the side of my neck in the right and still the one on the right under my jaw teamed up with the red bump on my uvula and a red lump with 3 white dots on my right tonsil that is also enlarged noting on the left at all. Called 111 as my right tonsil was bleeding and that’s what triggered the new antibiotic but they will not look in the mouth due to corona and are just saying to wait it out and apologise that it is getting progressively and worrying worse

I’m sorry that there are more things happening and you can’t even get it looked at. Not sure I can type what I actually want to put about that, but it’s a stronger version of ‘that sucks’.
I’m certainly no expert, but when reading up on enlarged lymph nodes it did say a warm compress could help. Know that’s not a fix, but hopefully it could ease your discomfort a bit.
Take care and do keep on letting me know how you’re getting on.

I got my ultrasound scan today the scanner and the consultant looked and said they didn’t feel a biopsy was needed and the shape and size of the node was fine, she also put a camera up the nose and said that she is not concerned and believes it to be “silent reflux” she has given me 6 week course of tablets and gaviscon and will call me back in 6 weeks. Fingers crossed it is that as I have been worried beyond belief.

Sorry its taken a while for my response.
That’s absolutely great news that they didn’t think a biopsy was necessary and your nodes are looking ok. Really pleased you’ve had your mind put at rest a bit
