Sorry if this has been posted already.
2 weeks ago my GP referred me to the breast clinic after finding a lump in my breast. This is accompanied by swelling in the armpit and my nipple being swollen.
I haven’t heard anything back just yet. I understand in usual circumstances that the referral process is roughly 2 weeks and the GP advised I should be seen within 2 weeks. Is anyone else facing a referral delay due to COVID-19? Or, in the experience of people in this forum, does the referral process usually take more than 2 weeks?
Many thanks for any advice that is offered x

Hi Rach8653
I’m my case I did have delay due to covid-19. I was told by the GP it would be a 2 week wait, however it was actually 4 weeks. I called the hospital after the 2 weeks to find out when it would be as I was getting anxious waiting. They told me there was a 6-8 week waiting list due to covid-19, but thankfully it was quicker than that.
Perhaps give them a call. At least then you’ll have an idea of how long you’ll be waiting. It seems to depend on your area and how busy it is.
Hopefully you won’t have too much longer to wait x

I would give them a call. I was seen a week after my GP referral, and during Covid-19. The 2 week wait should still be the standard, so there’s no harm in following up.

Thank you so much for your reply. Although not ideal to have to wait so long it does give me reassurance that my referral hasn’t gotten lost as you start to suspect it has when things take a while.
If the postman doesn’t come with anything tomorrow I will definately follow it up with the GP.
Thanks again xx

Hi Rach
My referral from.my doctors was also.a 2 week wait, i think lfrom others who’ve postrd on here 2 weeks referrals seem to be the norm.
I was lucky i was offered a cancellation appointment a week earlier than my original appointment. But to be honest my.appoinrment did come in the post in the first week.
Maybe you could ring the breast clinic and just ask if an appointmebt has been sent out as you were exoecting one to.have come through the post by now.
It would hopefuly answer your question and if not sent out already, it would get the ball rolling. If you dont know the breast clinic number try googling it , im sure you’ll find it there. If not ring the hospital switchboard and ask to be put through to the hospitals breast clinic. Dept
Hope this helps and good luck .x

Hi Rach8653.
I hope you’ve managed to get somewhere finding out about your appointment date. I’m in a similar boat to you really (visited the GP on 4th May about a lump in my breast after waiting a month on their advice to see if it went down after my period, received a letter on 11th May stating I was on the waiting list for the Breast Clinic and now nothing since). I’m 29 and have no family history of breast cancer so the GP said she’s referring me as a non-urgent case (although I do turn 30 at the end of this month). I tried ringing my GP this morning to see how I could go about contacting the breast clinic as there is no number on the waiting list letter I received and they didn’t know who to contact either so suggested contacting the hospital switchboard and asking to be put through to someone in the breast clinic department. I’m based in Cardiff and so was just wondering whether you went down this route and whether you were successful in managing to get through to the clinic and finding out about whether waiting times have been further delayed due to COVID 19?
Thanks very much x

Hi EmH90
So sorry you are going through the anxious wait of a breast clinic appointment, it’s not nice at all is it. I now have an appointment on Thursday 18th May, whcih will make it 4 weeks from my GP appointment to the referral. I was told id be expected to be seen within 2 weeks however due to COVID that seems to have doubled the wait time. The 2 weeks wait was for urgent appointments i have been told and mine was urgent due to a strong family history and the fact that I am over 30.
In the end i contacted my GP again and she told me to call the booking line to see if an appointment has been made. I am in Port Talbot so I contacted the relevant bookings number and they told me the date and time as it was in their system. I finally had a letter yesterday.
I had a look online so worth giving a try and asking if an appointment has been made as it may have been and a letter may not have yet been sent, just like my situation. On the pgone they told where the appontment would be too so they had all the info.
It’s a horrible time is’t it, especially as the wait times have increased.
I do really hope you have some luck as even knowing my appointment was made put my mind at ease. Let me know how you get on x

Thanks for the reply Fraser30. I suspected there might be delays due to COVID but all anyone can seem to tell me at the moment is that I’m on the waiting list and can’t give any idea of time frame. Hopefully I’ll be able to get through to someone from the department on the switchboard when I ring to find out more.
I hope that all goes well on Monday for you x
