What is Wrong with Preppers?
Survival tips to thrive and stay safe in a world that often isn’t. Survival, self-reliance, prepping, self-defense, and more.
Most preppers are good people willing to help others when ever they can. A few, such as James Sicone Burnette, Jack Spirko, Julie Sczerbinski, Gaye Levy, are some of the friendliest, most helpful, and genuine people you’ll ever meet.
But…every now and then, you run into an asshole. (I won’t name names.)
I’ll give you an example; last month, I wrote an article titled “Why You Probably Don’t Have Enough Water Stored,” which was pretty straight-forward—the goal was to help people understand how much water they really needed so they can plan accordingly.
Well, one particular keyboard warrior who felt his opinion was the final answer when it came to prepping, decided to attack me for offering such “stupid” advice. I apparently, was an idiot for telling people to store water for emergencies. According to him, anyone who stores water “doesn’t get it and will die in an emergency.”
Evidently, the only way someone will truly “get it” is to buy his product teaching you his very own top-secret, patented, “neva been done befo” bushcraft water purification system.
Newsflash: every method of water purification has been common knowledge for thousands of years, and regardless of the method, if you don’t have any water to purify, you’re screwed.
Look, we’re all working to become better prepared while educating others to build a self-reliant America, so let’s drop the petty “my technique is better than yours and you’re dumb” playground bullshit. Every situations doesn’t require running off to spend your life in the woods eating twigs and berries, in fact, few do.
No one knows everything, and everyone can teach all of us something, so let’s focus on what’s important—helping each other become self-reliant.
Nice short article. I would add, if you will, that part of prepping is to have alternates: filter, iodine and bleach. UV sterilizer, distiller, boiling. Pool shock. Each one has it’s own faults, and strengths. Filters go from a couple hundred gallons to thousands. Iodine tables are great for long term storage but expensive. Liquid bleach only lasts at most 18 months, but it’s highly concentrated. Dried bleach tablets are available cheaply so you can stock up – you just have to add extra work. UV Sterilizers are limited by volume of water and require power. Distiller is sometimes dangerous. Boiling requires fuel of some sort (excluding solar which is generally SLOOOOOOWWWW.) Pool shock, cheap and concentrated but takes room.
With each method, different environments take advantage of the properties of the method. I’m not talking 2 is 1, 1 is none. I’m talking about safety net on safety net.
I had started stockpiling water for emergency, labeling and dating so I could rotate on schedule over time. Then the emergency arrived ! My copper plumbing pipes that run through the concrete flooring under my house erupted. I was out of water for 5 weeks ! Thanfully, it rained every day but one day out of those 5 weeks before plumbers got my water back on. And thankfully I had a rain barrel, a wheel barrow, buckets, pots and pans to catch all the rain water to use to boil, bathe and flush my toilet. I carried water from the overflowing rainbarrel to keep my bath tubes filled for the convenience to be close for flushing my commodes. AND..thankfully I had stockpiled water to use for cooking and drinking that I boiled to be on the safe side. ANYONE who does not prepare for the worse scenerios can and will have a much rougher experience than this 69 yr. old Senior Blonde. “It’s better to have and not need than to need and not have.”…
You’ll always get people like that. But just as bad are those who say that THEIR way must fit your life. We store water, of course, we do, but probably not the way someone who lives on a desert might. We have a stream right by the house, two community springs that we could walk to if we had to, our well is fed by a mountain lake and it rains around here all the freaking time. Even with all of that, of course we store water.
