Low health literacy is a bigger issue than we first thought.
Research shows more than 4 in 10 adults in the UK struggle with health content intended for the public. This goes up to about 6 in 10 adults if the content includes numbers and stats.

We tested two versions of NHS website content with users. One had just been simplified with the help of a readability calculator called SMOG. The other had been completely rewritten based on user needs.
It showed readability scores cannot be trusted on their own. The rewritten content performed much better than the version just with simplified language.
The reality is readability scores only tell you if your content uses simple words. They can’t tell you if your content is easy for people to understand and use.
A common concern about simplifying content is that it might alienate more advanced users.
So, we tested content with two groups of users. One group had low health literacy. The other had higher health literacy (we determined this using the HLS-EU questionnaire).
We found all users seemed to benefit from the same things, including:
