SO LETS TALK STATISTICS
So many things today pose potential threats to our homes, our families and the lives we’ve built. Severe weather pounds large areas of the United States with tornadoes, fires and flooding. National crime rates continually climb as the economy teeters on the edge of collapse. Conditions are ripe for catastrophe as we find ourselves reliant on a frail economy for survival. You don’t need a vivid imagination to be able to foresee the potential wave of instability coming on the heels of any major event such as the one listed previously. We have witnessed civil unrest occur in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. We’ve seen first-hand the devastation left from riots and social backlash in response to political instability, social controversy and civil unrest. The mounting dangers are ever present and a constant threat to your family, home and ability to survive.
Although there have been many advancements in designing, engineering and building modern homes; the fact remains that much of the actual materials used in construction have remained the same. Modern homes may be equipped with alarm systems, security surveillance cameras, motion sensors etc… but in spite of all of these upgrades, most homes are still highly vulnerable to high winds, fire and flooding. Additionally, the vast majority of houses in America are not “modern” and lack even the most basic security provisions.
It’s easy to see how any significant catastrophe will challenge the pseudo-security of the typical American home. However the spin-off effects of any catastrophe will always result in civil unrest of some sort. It’s the “kill or be killed” mentality that the average law-abiding people adopt when confronted with such a scenario. We all need to feed our family and much of the population will do this at any cost. It’s logical to predict that people will eventually take to the streets in search of supplies. The average home made of wood, brick and glass will offer little protection against a group of people that are intent on gaining entry.
According to the FBI statistics, one burglary occurs every 10 seconds. In 2012 there were an estimated $8,975,438 property crimes. This number is staggering when you consider that this was during a time where resources and provisions are plentiful. Basically the almost 9 million property crimes were committed by the “criminal” element of our society. In catastrophic times even your average law abiding citizen will go to extremes to ensure survival.
Security is the number one thing a person should consider. Any preparations made will be worthless if you can adequately protect your rations. In the event of civil unrest and a looting situation the best way to avoid that violence is to first stay away from it. If you have adequately prepared your family, then don’t get out in the middle of it. Stay home in your safe place. It’s also wise not put a target on your forehead. Do not let others be aware that you have the goods that they need for survival. You might consider making your home appear as if it has already been looted. The last line of protection should be a safe place for you family to retreat as a last resort. A safe room is the ultimate defense against protecting your family in the event of a home invasion. Safe rooms can be completely hidden within your home so an intruder would not be aware it exists. They can also be built with security features such as surveillance systems, blast valves, NBC air filtration, and hidden escape tunnels.

A safe room is a good idea. How much does it cost to build one.? My home has a few vulnerabilities, but my family has a contingency plan for defense if it should come to that. One of the best bets, that is slightly more affordable, is 3/4 inch plywood. We have a large patio glass door that would shatter instantly due to someone smashing it in. A few sheets of plywood will at least slow them down long enough for us to regroup.

You can do what ever you can to avoid the areas where the problems are but sometimes the fight comes to us. Even though we stay at home when the unsavory person or group passes you home just the way it looks can draw attention to any passing people looking for food or what ever. Remember that defense is two-fold. First you need to avoid any fight all together. Do anything you can to not draw attention to yourself and your home. Based on the severity of the unrest in your area will determine how far you should go with the avoidance.
Even with all the good points made on safe rooms, here, I can’t go all in on safe rooms. History will show that desperate determination can and will defeat steel more often than not. I can’t speak for a man with a family to protect, but as a single guy, I would go with being a “difficult target”. I make no claim to being the sharpest knife in the drawer, but most stores hold is 3 days of wares. In the trunk of my car, I carry 7 days of wares(a lot more in my home. When the need for either is called on, I will not recognize anyone’s sense of entitlement to what I have. Who I choose, or not, to help will be my choice and not anyone else’s.

A safe room aka “coffin” is not a good idea for civil unrest due to armed gangs looting homes. They will just light your house on fire and burn you out. Best to keep food, guns, ammo well hidden and make your house look like its already been ransacked. The safe room is for defense against a burglar during normal times, not civil unrest.
That is certainly one risk. However just making your house look as though it has already been hit does not do anything to make sure that people won’t still go through it. Having a safe room gives you a last chance place to fall back to if needed. Chances are that in a civil unrest situation the gangs and folks who are out trying to get supplies are going to be more concerned with grabbing stuff and leaving they are not necessarily going to be looking for a fight. The movies make people think that it will be totally Madmax, but in reality the vast majority of people will just be doing their best to survive, not be on a bloodlust rampage.
