Fluid Interfaces is described as a frictionless experience that just feels “right”. But what exactly do we mean with “it just feels right”?
When picking up a tool, we know how this tool feels and how we may use it. If you’re picking up a hammer, you know it is heavy weighted and solid. You also know that it doesn’t have the same behavior or the same physics as a ballon for example.
Just as a hammer in the example above. When lifting it up it it feels in many ways like an extension of your body — like an extension of your mind. You know the physics. You know it is heavy weighted and solid. You know exactly how it behaves and how to use it. You are in total control.
How would you feel if the hammer you hold in your hand suddenly starts acting as a balloon?
Or if it acted like a grinding machine with its centripetal forces. You would quickly get disconnected with the tool. You would feel a total lack of control and most likely put it away.
When developing applications for smartphones they should really put the user in total control and you should feel like the application is an extension of your finger and of your mind.
Then your application will “feel right”.
