Hey girl (or guy, or gender non-confirming person) I’m trying to be nicer to myself. You should too. I hope you aren’t as harsh to yourself as I am, but if you are… let’s go through this mini thought journey together.
In a real way, not a sarcastic way where I avoid looking at my face in the mirror and ignore the fact that I’m tired AF. In a real way where I don’t undercut myself by saying stuff like:
I’m trying to be more realistic. I’m going to remind myself that everyone starts somewhere and that despite not having a full-time job, I’m at a prestigious internship, and I’m learning as much as I can right now. I’ll try to tell myself that a lot of the freelancers that are doing amazingly well sometimes come from wealthy families who paid their rent until they could get a foothold in the industry and make enough connections.
Despite coming from a working-class family, I’ve won awards and I’ve made it this far in my writing endeavors. And at least I try. So many of us (wealthy family or no) do our best to take the opportunities we’re presented with and we keep trying. We don’t stop after we fail, we do our best and we keep writing.
I used to tell myself:
But I finally moved out this year. Am I kinda broke? Hell yes. But I know how to budget, I work on different freelance projects every week. Every byline takes me closer to a job that I might like, or another offer to freelance. So if you’re feeling down, look back at the small steady progress you’ve made in the last month. And then the last year.
Our careers and our lives aren’t sprints, they’re marathons. And some of us weren’t born with all of the tools necessary, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t resourceful, that we aren’t capable of sourcing ideas if we need to. We’re scrappy. We’re resourceful. And we’re eager.

But that’s not true. Even posts that don’t get a lot of views get some views. More and more of my articles and essays for different publications are gaining traction on Twitter. When I started writing years ago, I never imagined this kind of interaction with other writers.
So, dear reader/writer… give it time. I’m on my journey, and so are you. It takes time and it’s frustrating and sometimes it just really sucks. Some days are shitty. But why make them worst by being mean to yourself?
Hold yourself accountable, grow your discipline, and learn your craft. But be on your own side throughout this journey. You have to be your own cheerleader. And it’s about time that I became my own cheerleader too.
