In a real way, not a sarcastic way where I avoid looking at my face in the mirror and ignore the fact that I’m tired AF. In a real way where I don’t undercut myself by saying stuff like:
I’m trying to be more realistic. I’m going to remind myself that everyone starts somewhere and that despite not having a full-time job, I’m at a prestigious internship, and I’m learning as much as I can right now. I’ll try to tell myself that a lot of the freelancers that are doing amazingly well sometimes come from wealthy families who paid their rent until they could get a foothold in the industry and make enough connections.
Despite coming from a working-class family, I’ve won awards and I’ve made it this far in my writing endeavors. And at least I try. So many of us (wealthy family or no) do our best to take the opportunities we’re presented with and we keep trying. We don’t stop after we fail, we do our best and we keep writing.
I used to tell myself:
But I finally moved out this year. Am I kinda broke? Hell yes. But I know how to budget, I work on different freelance projects every week. Every byline takes me closer to a job that I might like, or another offer to freelance. So if you’re feeling down, look back at the small steady progress you’ve made in the last month.
