The lid said, “Do not regret growing old, for it is a privilege denied to many.” My 16-year-old self appreciated the line but laughed, “I am not going to grow old and I certainly will not have my mother’s gray hair.”
The wishful thinking of youth now damned to be true. I am growing older and I have been fighting my mother’s gray hair, sprouting like lines across my head, since I was 20. Now, I am 31. Not old, but old enough to recognize my former self in a young 24-year old kid who sat across from me at my dinner table.
I stared at her in disbelief. Actually, it wasn’t disbelief, but the torrent monster of jealousy raging against a blue-eyed beauty. I remember being her, with all the naivete of being unsure in the world but sure of its possibilities. She amazed me. She spoke with hope and dreams and all the ideals that my life has lost — even against my willingness to grasp their ankles on the way out.
I am sure I was staring at her uncomfortably. But I could not help but stare and see myself, unmarried, no child, no mortgage, living off of Allsup’s burritos and Red Bull. She didn’t even have gray hair and no reason to use under eye cream. There were no bags of desperation hanging from her bright eyes. I sat with envy and heavy joy as we all laughed around our table.
