Fire From the Gods — the Wisdom of Prometheus
The world would be a much better place if we could see things from the point of view of others and be considerate of their needs and wants before our own.
Unfortunately, the lie of evolutionary replication of only the strongest genetic material has seen a distinct rise in ultra competitive and therefore destructive behaviour. When the reality is that throughout the natural world there is more evidence of mutual aid — helping each other for the benefit of both — than there is competition.
You see it throughout social media. People being hyper aggressive about their opinions, actively attempting to belittle others that might have a contrarian view with a preemptive strike where they accuse anyone of disagreeing with them of being an idiot or worse.
I’m not sure where it was stated that a difference of opinion is a declaration of war, but here we are.
The problem with the world comes from a lack of imagination. No one dreams anymore, and if they do, it’s about how they can monetise that dream instead of wanting to make the world a better place because we want to see the emancipation of the human race. We don’t reach for the stars, we try to pull the stars down to earth and sell them to the highest bidder.
The word imagination literally means “to picture one’s self”. And it’s that imagination that determines our reality, because we cannot build that which we haven’t pictured in our mind. The first principle of Hermeticism is that of Mentalism: the All is Mind, the Universe is Mental. So if we want our world to be different, we need to imagine it to be so first.
We are slaves to the idea that we can’t make a difference, and in believing that lie, it becomes our reality. So in essence…we are the very cause of the problem with the world we are complaining about. The only reason we think we can’t do anything about it is because we believe it’s somebody else’s problem, or that we don’t have any power to affect real change. And that’s exactly where those who are in control want us.
Thinking it’s all too hard.
Thinking that we can’t make a difference.
People who are in tune with themselves know there is something fundamentally wrong with a world severed from spirit — the collective consciousness of humanity. It is that connection that makes life worth living — that feeling of being part of something greater. Something positive and up-building. That’s why happiness is so fleeting — we try to fill this emotional and spiritual need with material possessions but that is only ever transient. And now social media has given us the tools to advertise our need to the world, finding groups of people who have the same needs as us…so we can sit around and complain about how we can’t do anything about filling that need, or worse, get a temporary fulfilment simply through people we’ve never met agreeing with our opinion. But in doing so, it has created even greater walls of isolation for those who don’t have the ability to express themselves.
We have fallen into the Abyss between the material, emotional world of the seven lower sefirot of the Tree of Life and the three spiritual, supernal sefirot — the super-consciousness of the Crown, where we find the will to create for the joy that it will bring to others; as well as the conscious intellect of Wisdom, Understanding, which is where we find both the ability to understand the needs and wants of others and put them before our own interests.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think operating from an ideology of mutual aid is a great way to make real progress. Imagine a world where everyone was doing things out of genuine compassion for other people, instead of using it as a method of control and oppression.
You and I…we’re going to help each other pull ourselves out of the abyss. One step at a time. And it starts with a simple affirmation.
This quote, attributed to Lebanese writer Kahlil Gibran, states that while love in itself is an internal emotion, felt in response to the actions of others, it is those actions — the work — that becomes the expression of the love we have for each other. Or as Christ said at Matthew 7:16, “By their fruits you will know them.”
So when we look around the world, what we see is the fruits of those who are in control at the moment. If things are in a state of decay, it’s because those who are in control are in a state of decay within themselves. No matter what they claim their motivation to be, the spirit of their work is made manifest through the attitude that it inspires in others.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Instead of asking what you can get out of a particular endeavour, why not ask how you can inspire others?
Instead of criticising the efforts of a colleague, why not tell them how you would go about improving their work?
Too many people are worried about others taking advantage of them. We’re not going to be like that. You see, we want others to gain an advantage through their interactions with us. The problem the world has at the moment is that we consider our talent and our emotional reserves to be finite — if someone steals our great idea, they will get ahead while we are left behind.
I say your talent and emotional reserves are infinite, replenished by the positive energy we extend out into the universe, and giving someone else a helping hand is exactly what being a human being is all about. The human race is not a literal one. It’s not a zero sum game where somebody has to win and somebody has to lose.
All of us have the spark of divinity within us. And by divinity, I simply mean the ability to gain satisfaction from the ability to bestow to others. Fredrick Nietzsche said that the third stage of the metamorphosis of the human spirit was to change from the destructive viewpoint of the Lion — where we tear everything that we know we don’t like apart and reject the burdens of belief that were placed upon us by others as the Camel — and become like the Child.
What are the characteristics of a child? Imaginative, inquisitive, innocent. Serious about play and about creativity. Wanting to include everyone in their particular game, with no exclusions as to who could participate based on race, creed or sexual orientation.
That’s what divinity is. The ability to create for creation’s sake, to know the joy of seeing others rejoice in the work that you have brought forth into the world. Don’t hide your talent under a basket. Be a light on the hill. Be that which inspires others. And if you feel like you aren’t sure what your talent is, turn that light into a lighthouse and guide others to discovering their latent abilities, because their success might be just the thing that awakens a dormant fire inside you.
In helping others to find their divinity, I promise that you will reclaim yours.
Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
