Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site

The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in western Montana, once one of the largest cattle ranches in the United States, recalls the days when the range was unfenced and seemingly endless. The Grant-Kohrs Ranch began in the 1850s when Johnny Grant, a Canadian trapper and hunter, settled in Deer Ranch Valley, where he raised cattle and built the largest home in Montana Territory. A newspaper reported that the house looked as if “it had been lifted by the chimneys from the banks of the St. Lawrence and dropped down in Deer Lodge Valley.”
Conrad Kohrs, a butcher and Danish immigrant, bought the ranch in 1866 and expanded the operation. At one point, Kohrs and his partner ran their cattle on more than a million acres of land in four states and Canada. For nearly a quarter of a century, Kohrs brought between 8,000 and 10,000 cattle to market a year. Today, rangers carry on the early ranch life, tending cattle, mending fences, and taking care of horses and equipment on the now 1,500-acre ranch.
Visitors can tour several ranch buildings, including the handsome ranch house and the bunkhouses where cowboys and ranch hands slept, ate, and spun yarns. Kohrs’ wife Augusta filled the home with the finest Victorian furniture and objects available, bringing a touch of culture to the otherwise primitive surroundings.
