Happiness Is Just a Few Words Away

For those of us who are writers, we know the power that lives within our words. We can write words that bring ourselves and others up and make others feel less alone. That’s part of the reason I (and many others) love to write. But it’s scary to think we could just as easily allow our insecurities to take over and become another negative, envious, and critical person online. It’s completely up to us and how we use our words.

The vast majority of people on this platform are kind, supportive, and encouraging. It’s a beautiful community I’m proud to be a part of. Even though we’re all working towards the same goal, we all have something different to offer. Even if we write about the same topics, our voices are different and appeal to different audiences.

We should draw from the writers who are far more experienced than us for inspiration and use their success to motivate us to find our own. There is room for all of us here but just a friendly reminder; there is no room for hate in a place full of so much love.

I realize the people who need to hear this message the most will probably never read this, but it’s a small reminder for the rest of us to rid ourselves of envy and instead, practice kindness.

I was checking my bags at the airport a few days ago, and an employee mentioned she thought my skin looked beautiful. I add that here because any comment about my skin is a sensitive subject for me. Whether it’s a good or bad comment, I tense up. If it’s positive, I can’t help but question the authenticity of the compliment. I suffered from cystic acne for most of my early twenties and to hear someone tell me I have nice skin, I almost don’t believe them out of habit.

I went through a rigorous course of Isotretinoin, the medication used to treat severe acne when I was 23. Isotretinoin, more commonly known by its brand name, Accutane, is a serious drug with severe side effects and risks. It requires monthly bloodwork to ensure the liver and kidneys are working properly because the drug stresses the internal organs as it eliminates any moisture from the body from the inside out.

I experienced depression, severe dandruff, eczema, dry lips, dry eyes, dry everything while taking this drug. My eyes were sensitive to the light, so driving during the day and night was a challenge. I was advised to stay out of the sun because I would burn almost immediately, as the drug rids the skin of any natural protectant from the sun. I put my body and mind through hell to get my clear skin back.

To her, it was just something nice to say to someone. But to me, it meant everything. It reminded me of the difficult years I spent learning to love myself, with acne, dry skin, and then, scars all over. I couldn’t take her words lightly. Not to say I needed someone else’s validation to feel all of this, but it was so kind of a stranger to make me feel so good, for no reason other than kindness.

If we have a nice thought, don’t hold back. Let that person know you like the way they smile. Tell that writer you admire that they’re talented and you enjoy reading their posts. You never know how much of an impact a few kind words can have on someone. It doesn’t cost you a dime to pay someone a compliment or tell someone you like the way they write. You’ll feel great knowing you could make someone else’s day better by practicing kindness. Never forget the power we hold in our words.
