Hi i’m new to this forum and decided to join as I’m not sure who to talk to. Just wanted to say that I haven’t been diagnosed with cancer so I don’t want to come across as insensitive. I am scheduled to do tests and the waiting part is eating me up.
I first experienced symptoms in March 2018 (persistent stomach pains and bowel movements), I finally got myself off to the GP in April and was sent off for some blood tests which came back clear. I went to A&E in the same month after experiencing severe pains in my stomach area but was told it was just probably IBS. I was embarrassed as I thought I had wasted their time so when my stomach pain persisted I chose to ignore it.
Fast forward 8 months (I know I can’t believe I ignored it for 8 months :’(), during this time I have lost 2 stones without exercising or changing my diet, continued to have stomach discomfort/pain, heartburn and feeling sick and now having pains in my right shoulder. I saw my GP on 30 Dec and stomach cancer was mentioned, I’ve been sent off for blood work and scans (waiting for letters to come through). I googled (I know I shouldn’t but I can’t help it) and stomach cancer sounds really scary, especially since I’ve delayed getting checked out for so long. I’ve got almost all the symptoms and I’ve convinced myself that I already have it and it’s terminal especially because of my shoulder pain, I’m telling myself that it must have spreaded already and it’s too late.
i have two girls under 3, with my youngest having just turned 1 and I’ve been crying so much blaming myself for not going back to my GP. My girls will be too young to remember me much and everytime I think about it I start crying again. My husband thinks I’m being silly but he’s the type to be in denial/not think about it unless there is evidence to say otherwise.
Im guessing nhs appointments take a while? And I remembered that I have private healthcare with my work and have just booked to see someone but the earliest they can do is next week. Should I be going to A&E? Are they able to do an endoscopy there or would I be sent back home to wait for a letter?

Oh bless you, you are letting your imagination run wild ( I am also guilty of this) but you’re now in the system, the NHS is a wonderful machine and you must put your trust in them. BTW…stay clear of dr google…he isn’t your friend right now …
The worse bit is now…the waiting can be unbearable but wait you must….you will soon get a call or letter letting you know what’s next…stomach problems run in my husband s family and funnily enough you have just described the symptoms of ibs….don’t forget stress and worry will also cause stomach problems, so you will be in a vicious circle….
try and relax….close the dr google tab….and try and do something you enjoy…..
keep us posted xxxxx

Hello and thank you for posting a question a question. I am sorry to learn about your health concerns. I can appreciate that this must be a worrying time for you.
I may be putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with the wrong answer, but as you have a young child of 1, I would imagine that you are relatively young. I mention this because stomach cancer is very rare indeed in women below the age of 40 . Even if you are an older mother, stomach cancer is not particularly likely as it is very uncommon in women in their 40’s. So although I cannot rule it out completely, on the balance of probability stomach cancer is not very likely.
Although there is a lot of good health information available on the worldwide web, the problem with ‘Dr Google’ is that if you put any set of symptoms into this search engine it usually comes up with a few possible conditions and often at least one of the suggestions is a serious illness. But rarely is a set of symptoms specific to just one illness so it is not really a reliable method of diagnosis and it can cause a lot of worry which often is not necessary.
You seem particularly worried about the shoulder pain, you can get this with gallbladder problems as well and your symptoms could possibly be due to a problem such as gallstones. But only tests can tell if it is this or not.
I am pleased to see that you have had some support from one of the other forum users and I hope that this has helped a little. But clearly waiting for tests investigations and results is stressful and so it is understandable that you are unsettled. There is no easy way to get through this, but keeping busy and doing things that you enjoy can help a little and it sounds like you are already doing this.
I hope that you get some answers soon. Please get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
All the best,
Jean

Hello and thanks for posting,
I am sorry to hear you are having some symptoms that are worrying you.
Symptoms can have various causes and most of the time settle after a short while and won’t be the result of anything serious.
However it is always best to get a symptoms that are ongoing or getting worse checked out by your doctor to be on the safe side. If need be the doctor will arrange some more tests to see what might be going on.
I understand you were asking the person who started this thread how they got on but as it was a while ago I am unsure if they will get back in touch.
Try not to worry but get yourself checked out for your peace of mind,
Take care,
Naomi

I have got the same symptoms and I haven’t told anyone.
i have been to A+E and the doctors multiple times.
My blood test came back fine but now they want me to have an endoscopy and I’m scared to death.
the only thing is that I’m not old enough to have it (normally).
i just want to live my life how I used to be able to as I was on the way to becoming a swimming champion.
Im really worried about how it can kill and I want to live a life.
please let me know how your results are. Best wishes thx

Hello and thanks for your post
I’m sorry you are worried about your health.
Stomach cancer is uncommon and when it does occur it usually affects people over the age of 60 so there is probably some other explanation.
The next step is to have the endoscopy and until then there is no way around waiting to find out more.
Many people go online to try and find a cause for their symptoms but the information online is general and not specific to you. It cannot replace the information that a doctor can give a person after a medical assessment.
I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk things through. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Kind regards,
Celene
