I’ve had a right arm ache for a few days and yesterday I felt that under my armpit it was sore/tender to touch. At first I thought I could feel a lump but now I’m not so sure. For the past 24 hours in the same arm I’ve had a pins and needles/numb/tingling sensation right down to my hands and a dull ache in the whole of my arm. My elbow has also felt sore a couple of times today.
I’ve stupidly googled none stop and convinced myself it’s down to breast cancer as my Nanna, her 2 sisters and her niece have all previously had a diagnosis. I have all the symptoms of lymphadema so now convinced myself I’ve had breast cancer that I didn’t know of and it’s spread to my lymph glands.
ive done the nipple squeeze and no discharge comes out.
My GP surgery isn’t open so had a telephone consultation and he’s prescribed antibiotics as he said it’s probably some kind of infection (I have no other symptoms to indicate this so struggling to accept it is) He didn’t once mention cancer or ask about family history, which has concerned me since incase it gets overlooked.
My question is are these symptoms common for breast cancer? Does the armpit pain/tingling indicate a spread to lymph nodes and can I request a referral for tests if they don’t improve (I’m 42). Ive worried myself sick and been through all sorts of scenarios in my head as I have 2 daughters age 7 and 10 who are my absolute world.
Thankyou so much for listening x

Hello
I am sorry to read about how worried you are. The symptoms you describe are not common early symptoms of breast cancer. You can read about the symptoms of breast cancer here .
Although lymphoedema can occur when breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the armpit, it is more common to see it after someone had had cancer treatment to the armpit.
So I would expect that there will be some other explanation for the problems you are having. But there must be some reason for your symptoms so if things get worse or don’t get any better you should see your GP again.
It would also be worth mentioning to them about your family history. GPs have access to guidelines that help them to assess whether someone’s family history of breast cancer puts them at increased risk.
However, usually for you to be at increased risk you would expect to see at least one first degree relative having had breast cancer. First degree relatives are very close relatives like your mother, daughter or sisters rather than grandparents. There is more information about family history and breast cancer here
I hope this has been helpful, Do go back to your GP if things don’t improve
Take care
Martin

Just a little update incase anybody comes across this with similar symptoms – I’ve been taking the antibiotics for 3/4 days now. My armpit pain cleared after 2 and the other symptoms are about 90% better than they were when I posted. My arm/elbow still ache a little but I’m hoping by the time I finish the meds this will have disappeared- will come back and update if anything changes.
