What Causes Warts?
Using sound judgment to be more self-reliant.
In this post we’ll cover a bit of info on what causes warts and wart identification, before giving you a great list of home wart treatments to help you get rid of your warts.
Several many years ago I was blessed with plantar warts on the heel and toe of my right foot. They were fairly large and uncomfortable (heel about the size of a pencil eraser, toe about half that).
This was the B.C. (Before Crunchy) time in my life, so I scheduled a doctor’s appointment to have them removed with a laser. GAH! Never again! The smell of charred flesh was foul, as was the crater in the bottom of my foot, but the worst part was that the darn things came right back! I ended up treating with over the counter wart removers, pecking and poking until the darn things finally disappeared.
I was not happy when I recently discovered a Mini Me version of the heel wart had returned. (This is fairly common, since the wart virus can hang around dormant in your system.) This time I caught the wart early, and am unleashing the full armada of home remedies for warts to knock it out.
Note: This post was originally written in 2014 and updated in 2017 and 2019. I used apple cider vinegar and duct tape on my wart and it was gone before I had a chance to try anything else.

Whether they are common warts (found on hands and other spots), plantar warts (on the soles of the feet), palmer warts (on the palm), flat warts (often found on back of hand, but also elsewhere, smaller and flatter than other warts) or genital/anal warts (found in genital area and nearby real estate), warts are all caused by strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Skin damage, moisture, direct contact with warts or contact with surfaces touched by warty humans, and a stressed out immune system can all contribute to the appearance of warts.
It depends on the type of wart. Warts have a wide range of appearances, including but not limited to:
Do an online image search for your wart of choice, and you’ll come up with many photos – but be warned – some are pretty darn scary.
NOTE: Before considering self-treatment of warts, make sure to get a positive ID. The Skin Cancer Foundation has a 5 point checklist for identifying signs of skin cancer.
Plantar warts are often sore to the touch – which is how I discovered the wart on the bottom of my foot. My heel hurt after a long day on my feet. Then I found the telltale dot.
Here’s another photo from when my eldest found a couple of warts on his foot. (These photos were taken three years apart. Thankfully we are not overly wart prone, but they do show up from time to time.)
Yes, most warts will disappear on their own over time, but it may take a year or two. Meanwhile, they can be uncomfortable, painful or just embarrassing. Thus, a need for cheap and easy wart removers.
Remember, always consult a trained healthcare provider for serious disease or injury, excessive pain or bleeding. I read some nasty horror stories online while researching about folks who made some bad decisions while attempting home treatment of genital warts that led to secondary infections.

As any good home remedy user will know, apple cider vinegar (ACV) is the Queen of Home Remedies. It’s sort of like Windex in “My Big, Fat Greek Wedding” – just use it for whatever’s bothering you. Headaches, sunburn, acid reflux – ACV is a treatment option. It has over 112 positive recommendations as a wart treatment on EarthClinic.
To use vinegar as a wart treatment, simply soak a little cotton ball or some gauze with vinegar and apply to the wart area. Wrap it in place with a bandage or medical tape. I usually apply at bedtime and keep it on overnight, and then let it air out during the daytime.
The wart (and some skin surrounding it) will discolor and die back. Gently abrade and remove the dead wart tissue. Repeat as needed until wart is gone. Take a break if needed if skin area around wart becomes uncomfortable.
Urine therapy for warts is applied much the same as ACV. Dip your gauze or cotton ball in the urine and bandage it on the wart area overnight. Urine from the wart-ridden individual is best. A close family member will do in a pinch.
Slough away dead wart material each day. My friend, Adrienne, noted that her son found urine therapy less irritating than apple cider vinegar as a wart treatment. They designated a specific cup for urine collection, and applied the pee most nights over the course of a few weeks until the warts disappeared.
I’ve been waiting to use duct tape for a home remedy, because it has a light side and a dark side and holds the universe together, like the force. 😉 The premise is simple – the irritation of the duct tape being stuck to your skin is supposed to get the attention of your immune system faster and send it to vanquish the dreaded wart invader.
Just cut a patch to cover the wart area, stick on, and leave until it falls off. Let air out for a while, repeat.
In between, abrade with a pumice stone and clean wart area to remove dead tissue. Positive aspects of this method are that you can use a smaller patch of duct tape than a typical bandage, and it comes in fun colors.
Banana peels contain a proteolytic enzyme that softens and dissolves the wart. Eat your tasty banana, then scrape the whitish interior of the peel and apply in a manner similar to the ACV.
This wart remedy is all over the internet, and is the second most popular recommendation on EarthClinic, so you know it works for many people. Given that what you’re looking for here is the enzymes, I suspect fresh pulp from papaya, pineapple and figs (which are also high in enzymes), would also work well, if you don’t happen to have bananas on hand.
Coconut oil is another “go to” staple in my kitchen and skin care regime. I use it as an ingredient in my hard lotion bars. Proponents claim that it is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, so it would make sense that it could help ditch warts.
Apply regularly, preferably coating the affected area and bandaging as with the methods above.
Honey is another powerhouse of healing, as we discussed in the post “Honey as Medicine“. It contains enzymes, is naturally acidic, and draws excess moisture out of the tissues.
Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand and Australia by bees feeding on manuka (tea tree) plants, which are well known for their medicinal properties. Since tea tree oil is another commonly recommended wart remedy, manuka honey is like getting a two in one punch.
Whichever honey you choose, make sure it’s real honey, not an adulterated product. I buy bulk local honey for general use, but I also keep a container of manuka honey on hand for just this sort of thing. Apply honey to the wart area and bandage, and use follow up treatment in a similar manner to other options listed above.
You know the white, sticky stuff that gets on your hands when you break open a dandelion or milkweed stem? That liquid latex can be used to banish warts for good. Some folks apply and bandage, others just apply on a regular basis without bandaging until the wart is gone.

Most people know aloe vera is great for burns and can be used as an herbal antibiotic, but some people also swear by it as a pain free way to remove warts. Erin gives a glowing recommendation at Earth Clinic:
Just wanted to let you know that I have tried everything to get rid of a painful plantar wart on the bottom of my foot. I tried duct tape, ate tons of bananas, tried every OTC thing possible, even Tagament. I could hardly walk because the foot would hurt so bad. It would be red and painful by the end of the day.
Finally tried aloe vera gel. I put it on one night and within two days, I noticed it did not hurt as bad. About a week later, I noticed I could walk without any pain and the wart had turned black.
Almost two weeks later, the wart had dried up and I was able to take a pair of tweezers and pull it completely out. The wart is gone and my foot feels and looks normal except a little dry rough spot where the wart was, a small crater like hole where the wart was that is closing in. I am so happy and relieved as I had the wart for about four months.
Bizarre but true – the third most popular “wart remedy” listed on Earth Clinic is a category lumped together as “voodoo remedies for warts”. From the lady who stopped hating her wart and started loving it – and watched it disappear, to the grandma who rubbed a raw potato on her grandson’s warts and buried it in the backyard and saw the warts gone in under three weeks, it seems like there’s a good chance that if you believe whatever you’re doing to get rid of the wart will work – it does.
Possibly the coolest home remedy I’ve heard of for warts to date:
“When I was 5 years old, (nearly 60 years ago), I had warts on my hands.
My Grandpa “bought” them from me for a penny. He gave me the penny, told me to go home and not talk for the rest of the day, (hmmmm…could have been a motive there).
Within a couple of days they were gone! Placebo effect maybe but true.”
When I mentioned these wart remedies to my son’s piano teacher this week (Miss Betty of the No Canning Dill Pickles and Rye Bread), she said her grandmother told her that to get rid of warts, you needed to steal a dishcloth from your neighbor and bury it in your backyard.
She wouldn’t let me steal her dishcloth, so my wart’s still here ( 😉 ), but I’m sure one of these remedies will make it just a memory very soon.

“The best wart remedy is comfrey leaf! Put a couple leaves in boiling water and steep it. When it’s cool enough, soak the area with the wart for 20 minutes or so. Do this a couple times a day until they’re gone.
How long is that? I’m sure it varies from person to person.
I had plantar warts on the bottom of one heel when I was about 8 yrs old. When my grandmother saw me not walking on that heal she looked and discovered the plantar warts. She ran outside and grabbed comfrey leaves off her plant and soaked my heel twice a day. No more than one week later they were all gone and have never returned!”

The best paste or poultice to get rid of warts is Turmeric! It has antifungal properties and warts are fungus. Make a paste with it or a small slice of fresh apply and cover. Reapply for a week or more.
It it dries the skin so be willing to every other night if needed and it stains but it works completely. Absorbed into the body and when I used it it also killed the ones I didn’t put it on. Works every time.
Note: As mentioned earlier in the article, warts are caused by a virus, not a fungus, but curcumin (found in turmeric) is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal.
Julie-Eliz recommends garlic to get rid of warts:
“I used garlic slices and Band-Aids. The warts blistered up and after the blisters healed and the dead skin came off the warts went with it. Didn’t hurt and I didn’t mind the garlic smell at all. Took about ten days all together.”
Carly chose essential oils for wart treatment:
“Thieves essential oil and Natures Aid skin gel (aloe with tea tree, witch hazel, rosemary and vitamin E). I put a few drops of Thieves oil on a cotton swab and wiped the wart and surrounding area with it then covered with a bandage that had Natures aid on it. Did this twice a day and the wart was gone in a week.”
Another simple wart removal option is plain aspirin. Just dissolve the aspirin (non-coated) in enough water to make a paste, and apply it as a poultice.
Through the miracle of modern technology, you can purchase home freeze kits to get rid of warts. Tracy shares her experience:
“My aunt had really good luck with apple cider vinegar, but after home remedy after home remedy (apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, duct tape, acid etc) I bought a dimethyl ether product and froze my warts and they are finally going away.”

Salicylic acid liquid and gel are other popular over the counter wart treatments. The gel formula is easier to put right where you need it – no drips.
A reader shared this story with me via email about how they got rid of their genital warts with kerosene.
I had asked God to have mercy on me and reveal to me the cure for the warts I had. The Holy Spirit said to me “kerosene”. So the first thing I did was Google search “warts and kerosene. “
What I found was a comment someone had left on a blog post detailing how her father worked in a foundry and was working one day when his hands were filthy and there was no running water around, so he rinsed his hands with kerosene. The man had warts on his hands and, soon after he had rinsed in kerosene, the warts disappeared!
So this gave me hope. I decided to use a cotton ball to apply kerosene to my genital warts, allow it to dry and then wash it off.
It was painless and I noticed no side effects. I did this every day for a month and I watched as the warts shrunk and eventually they were gone! They never returned!
I wanted to share this somewhat embarrassing story because I remember what it was like to have no hope. I want others to know this remedy, so they too can find relief!
If you decide to use kerosene for warts, please be careful. The kerosense materials safety data sheet notes:
Contact with eyes and face may cause irritation. Long-term exposure may cause dermatitis (itching, irritation, pain and swelling). Kerosene has shown to augment the toxicity of skin sensitizing agents.
Inhalation may cause irritation and significant or long term exposure could cause respiratory insufficiency and pulmonary edema.

Duct tape works. I had a wart that came back for YEARS. Had every tx.–burning,acid,laser– known until I tried the duct tape not really expecting any change. In fact, after a few weeks I forgot about doing it. Until one day I was lotioning my feet and I was shocked to find that nasty wart was gone. Just gone. Disappeared totally! Quarter-sized
Heck of a lot cheaper than laser treatment, too.
My Grandfather accidentally found that if you cut a wort slightly, and put in kerosene, it kills them. He was working on machinery and accidentally cut the wort and cleaned his hands in kerosene.
That sounds like it would be somewhat painful, but it’s not a bad thing to know.
I used this remedy on a case of genital warts and after treating the warts once a day for about a month (applying, letting dry, washing off) the genital warts disappeared! Thank you so much for speaking out about this remedy. I wonder if there is some way this truth could be used to treat women with the same issue…maybe scientists could test a kerosene derivative treatment to help women be rid of the awful genital warts too!

I’d try the less irritating options and see if they can clear the warts. That has to be uncomfortable.
New fig growth when picked while young and green ooze latex…would this latex work as well? It seems to me that anything you do that cuts off the air to the growth, stops it?
I bet it would. You’re looking to cut off air and potentially act as a mild irritant to get the attention of the immune system.
When my son was young, we had a fig tree in California. I used the white “latex” sap to get rid of his warts. It totally worked!
Do be careful with fig sap, as it can cause phytophotodermatitis and nasty blisters. More info in the post, “My Worst Gardening Mistake“.
Warts also typically respond very well to hypnotism.
I did not know that, but it wouldn’t be surprising given some of the other folk remedies.
Castor oil (a Cayce remedy) works well, particularly on smaller newer warts. Older tougher ones require more persistence. Rub it in and around the wart once or twice a day. Works on moles too.
Interesting. I hadn’t heard of this one, but I know castor oil used to be a medicine cabinet staple.
I got rid of a mole using Castor Oil (cold pressed and organic type). I just put some on whenever I thought to and it was gone in a month.

My sister in law was a registered nurse who told me to soak the heel daily in clorox. Was gone quickly and with little effort!
Straight clorox or diluted clorox? I would think straight would be very irritating to the skin.
I cured my plantar wart by rubbing my feet with baking soda, making sure the hole was filled. After a few weeks, my 25 year old wart disappeared completely, never to return. I can’t even pinpoint where it was located.
Interesting. Was it painful at all, and how often did you need to apply it?
I had a bad wart on my heal that Drs tried to burn off. It didn’t work but I found out by accident that Cider Vinegar works great. I just soaked my foot in a pan of vinegar water serval time and it was gone.

As a teenager I had a wort on my hand about 55 year ago. The wort had been there for several weeks when a friend of mine forced me to have him a clove of garlic over the wort. It was gone within a couple of weeks and I have never had a wort since.

Yep, raw garlic works. Nature’s antibiotic.
We use oil of oregano (oreganol). I put a drop of the oil on a bandaid and cover the wart. I keep the bandaid on as much as possible. It goes pretty quickly if you can do it that way. If you just do it at night and let it air during the day it takes longer but wont come back.

Trying the duct tape now! One plantar wart from 16 years ago became two now there’s four on my heel! Fairly painless but if I don’t remove the excess skin every now and again it hurts!
I’ve had a few warts on my feet for about 4 years. One is under my toenail and has been pushing it out. This year id been going to the doctor to get it frozen with liquid nitrogen once a week for 3 months. It kind of seemed like it was working but it’s really done f all, they’ve spread, and it’s super painful. The doctor even said it doesn’t work for everyone. So I got tried of that. I did try bandaging fresh garlic to them while I went to sleep, I think that was working alright but my boyfriend didn’t like the house smelling like garlic all the time, so now I’m trying fresh aloe Vera. It’s only been about a week so its hard to tell if muh is changing, one is kind of bloody looking now, im putting it on twice a day, hopefully it works better than liquid nitrogen.
Oooo… that sounds awful. I hope you can find something that works.
UPDATE: Since Summer of 2016, I dabbed tea tree oil with a q-tip directly on my warts 2-3 times a day for about 3 months. My warts completely went away without blistering or scabbing. There are a few small scars (which could have been from previous liquid nitrogen) but it’s only on my feet so who cares. Tea Tree oil worked like a miracle potion for me and wasn’t painful at all. My toenail is even growing back normally now. You can buy it at most pharmacies/health food stores and it can help with acne too. Highly recommend!
My son had plantar warts for years and they got so bad it was becoming very painful for him to walk. His foot was completely covered. We tried several over the counter and home remedies. We even tried having the doctor freeze them off. Nothing worked until I read about red thyme oil. We applied it for 5 days and they completely disappeared.

I’m doing the pee thing. Started this yesterday, I’m using a Q-tip with urine on it. Dabbing it on my wart, which is on top on my 2nd toe, at the knuckle.. then wrapping a couple of Band-Aids securely around the entire toe. I changed the Band Aid today, and when I was dabbing the wart with urine, the top peeled right off! I wrapped it up again after…can’t wait to see what it looks like tomorrow! Oh, and my hubby said when he was young, he had three warts on his hand. His Italian great aunt told him to rub the white sap from a fig branch on them. He did, for a couple of days, and he said they disappeared…never to return! We don’t have a fig tree, so hence the urine. =)
Best of luck with the pee. From everything I’ve seen, it should work. A word of warning on the figs. Fig sap can cause phtyophotodermatitis, so it’s best used with caution. Some folks shared their experience with excess exposure in the comments on the parsnip burn post.

Has anybody tried clear nail polish? If so did it work? I have used it on other things like Chigger bites where you want to cut off the air to them to kill them off and from what I have read is you want to cut off air to warts also. Please correct me if I am wrong, I will let you know if it works also.
I would think that nail polish would also act as an irritant, stimulating the immune response. Let me know if it works.

Just saw your comment here about using nail polish. Yes it does work well! I used it myself to get rid of my wart in conjunction with a few other ingredients. The nail polish works as an excellent sealant that will starve the oxygen of your plantar wart.
A friend told me she cured hers with vitamin e oil, and since I happen to have some, that’s what I’m trying. I’ll let you know if it works.

I have a cluster of small warts on my face and they have been spreading. I think they are flat warts. I have been been using coconut, tea tree, frankinsence oil and aloe. I see them fading but once I go back into the sun it’s like they get stronger. How long usually does it take for them to go away ? Thank u
Time to heal varies tremendously between individuals. There’s no way to say for sure. Please be very careful so you don’t introduce scarring on your face.
Kate I had it on the portion near my nostrils. And I had struggled for 3 years with them. Burning is not a solution because they reappear. Its also very painful if its face. Those needles piercing my nostrils was a horrible expirience. Finally I tried a medicine called Wartosin. Its a 3 ml bottle, and Indian product. That was the most amazing thing I could fine. It burns a little on the skin but in 45 days all my warts fell off, no marks and ofcourse they havent reappeared.
Though with warts you need to try different treatments. Itss not essential that the same would work but you can try it.
I struggled with warts on the nose almost 3 yrs. I started with burning them off, took those painful injections on the nose but they kept on reappearing with a vengenace and often multiplied. Tried several dermattologist but nothing seem to work. Since the warts were on the nostril region duct tapes were not holding up. It was so much frustrating. After burning my warts several times I moved to Homeopathy and was prescribed Thuja but unfortunately even that didnt work. The warts were growing bigger without any signs of falling off and ultimately I had to get it burned.
One fine day my mom suggested Wartosin lotion. Its a 3 ml bottle and has to be applied only on wart. It has ayurvedic compostion but on the skin it burns a lot. On wart it may burn a little but you wont feel much. Wartosin worked like anything. In 2 bottles and applying it for one and a half months the worst of my wart just fell off. It first gets rid of the dry skin surrounding the wart and thus directly exposing the wart and then makes it almost in effective. I did have a scary black mark from where the biggest wart feel off but in 2 days it was gone. I have 7 warts near my nostril and finally all of them are off. Its been 2 months now and none have re appeared. Strongly recommend trying Wartosin. I have seen it available also on amazon for those living out of India.
Number 11 sts warts are fungus. As you sts above they are from a papilloma virus not fungus. great article. I am going to try some of these remedies because nothing doctors have suggesed, or prescribed since I was 5 years old for planter warts work. I am 63 now! So if any of these remedies work I will be thrilled and share with you.

My co-worker said the same exact story about buying the wart for a penny! She said that is was only the old pennies because they used to be made with copper. I have one about the size of a penny on the ball of my big toe. I’ve been trying ACV, tea tree and oregano oil, and still trying to freeze it. I’m about to break down and go to the foot dr.

My son got rid of all his warts taking milk thistle. He was plagued with them for years. Had them burnt off, just came back. Milk Thistle cured. Hasn’t had a one since he started taking Milk Thistle

As a fellow plantar wart sufferer I understand the frustration and pain of these annoying little growths. For the longest time I thought it was a callus! You list some excellent natural solutions. I like the Manuka Honey and turmeric paste remedies you listed hear. I did not realize manuka had some traces of tea tree oil! Using tea tree oil extract is also another excellent remedy. It attacks warts quickly and effectively. Have you ever tried nail polish or papaya? Those work quite well.
Here is a gross one for you I wouldn’t recommend it but for the sake of science, I will share the experience. I don’t get warts very often, but when I was a teenager I had one on my hand. After a few months I started to bite it. Bit by bit each day – usually when bored in school. I bite my nails etc so chewing on my own body wasn’t all that weird to my teenage self. Until I came to a black dot like a small black hair, I pulled this out and the wart disappeared and never returned.
That is rather gross, but if it worked…
Can I use one of these wart treatments for a wart (diagnosed yesterday) that’s inside my nostril nearer to my cheek? I’m hoping this isn’t the dumbest question ever…lol.
The remedies should be safe to use (although I’d avoid attempting duck tape and pee would be rather smelly), but be aware that the options like cider vinegar and weed sap will be irritating. If it’s a mole and not a wart, wart removers are unlikely to have much effect (except the ACV, and that’s going to sting more than a little if it works). Be extremely careful treating on the face, and face wounds are prone to bleed excessively.
What home remedy can be best for the anal wart as the keratolytic solution inflicts much stings and pains on me
I don’t have any personal experience with anal warts, so I can’t make a specific recommendation. Follow the recommendations of your heath care provider, or try any of the remedies in the post. I would avoid using duct tape, especially if you have a hairy bottom. Coconut oil is likely to be the least irritating.
Mayapple roots contain a drug that’s sold as a prescription for warts and Muscollum but you can harvest this root and make a tincture by grating the root and then making an ointment with bacitracin. Be careful all parts the plant are toxic if ingested I wore latex gloves when preparing the ointment. Also make sure to wash off after 4 hours as this is really powerful stuff. One treatment per week for up to 4 weeks should do the trick. This isn’t a snake oil treatment. The active ingredient is the same as the one the pharmaceutical industrial complex will try to sell you for about $400.00
I used a product called tiger balm ( used the white/clear not the red/ dark one) placed a cotton pad the flat typed (used for make up removal ) and taped around my hand for the night in the morning I used a cuticle trimmer like sicorssors and cut the easily removal area which was moist off . Continued to do this until it was gone. Google Tiger Balm … One of its uses is to kill warts.

I have a new one for you! Years ago my six year old daughter had a few warts on her hands one larger and two small. We went on a family vacation to Daytona Beach. We vacationed for two weeks each day playing in the sun, sand, and salt water. When we returned home to Connecticut to my amazement the warts were gone never to return. I believe making sand castles digging in the sand and salt water somehow killed the virus.
Salt water is commonly recommended for psoriasis patients, too. Thanks for sharing your story.
I had my wart between ring a pinky fingers for 2 years. I tried the store freeze always and no luck! I wanted to know if comfrey cream would work because it worked for my sons molluscum contagiosum, which are very similar to warts?
There’s only one way to find out for sure if it will work for you. (As you’ve found out, not every wart cure work for every person.) Might as well try it since you have it available.
Well thank you so much for your advice. Two days ago I had quite a large (painful) plantar wart on the heel of my foot (which I thought was a verruca until I saw your pictures). I put Apple Cider Vinegar on it and covered it with duct tape and now it has already completely vanished!! I am amazed and can’t thank you enough for this advice.
Yeah! So glad that it cleared out quickly for you. Sometimes they can be very stubborn.
