It’s OK to ask for reviews, but the review process should be natural. Google is smart. They know when something is up and it’s obvious if a review is keyword stuffed or over the top. The best bet is to focus on your business and providing a good customer experience and good reviews will happen naturally.
I agree that reviews can come naturally, but I don’t think it hurts to ask for a review either. You need to do everything you can to succeed in online business these days, especially if your niche has a lot of competition. Fantastic article and great tips for how to write a great review.
It’s good to have positive ratings and reviews for your online business so it’s a smart approach to encourage your clients or customers to drop a review or rate your Google Local Business Listing. And the best way to receive positive reviews is to provide a high quality service to them!

I agree with your points Google places is an essential tool in increasing business but in my point of view it should be natural. I think only one review would be done in a day from a unique IP.
It should be done that you can request review from your client and when they will do review then it will be automatically natural.

You’re right Dave, spammy reviews can cause lethal damages to the business. But no doubt Google Places is an essential internet marketing tool when we target our business in the local markets. I too agree with Nick, reviews should flow naturally, and there is no point in adding reviews crammed with keywords. Not only Google online users too nowadays are smart enough to seperate chaff from grain.
I made the mistake of sending out an email to my clients and asking them to write a review. The mistake wasn’t asking, it was asking them all at the same time. In the matter of a day I got over 20 reviews and got taken off Google Places/Maps for over a week. I suggest sending out emails a couple of weeks apart so that it doesn’t look like you did it yourself.
